Coppereye Posted April 5, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 5, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone. This is my first post on here but I needed to ask a question and maybe some insight. My Leica Q arrived a couple of weeks ago and I love it. One of the first things I noticed was that the lens cap was quite a tight fit. One of the first things I do on any lens is to put a filter on the front. What I find now is that the lens hood doesn't stay on as thought the filter is too thick. It's not a Leica filter its a Hoya Revo. Has anyone else experienced this? and is so how have you sorted it (if you have) Paul

lucerne Posted April 6, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 6, 2016 Paul. It sounds like you haven't removed the narrow lens shade protector ring! Any filter should be 49mm and fitted to the inside thread on the front of the lens before you add the lens hood which is accurately made to screw on and be correctly aligned with the lens to avoid vignetting. Don't fit a filter to that lens hood thread. You should remove the narrow thread protection ring and put it away. The lens cap will now fit fully over the end of the lens hood, which can remain permanently on the body. Hope that helps.
Herve5 Posted April 6, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 6, 2016 ordinary non-Leica filter here, but as I'm leaving the lens hood permanently, the cap, once fit on the hood, just "doesn't see" the filter... So I didn't even check the cap would fit on the filter alone... (Some have discussed else where on how to link the cap to the camera, in case it detaches itself or you just want to throw it away and snapshot...) H. Pete McGill Posted April 7, 2016 Share #4 Posted April 7, 2016 This post got me to check things against my Q. I normally have the lens hood on and no filter. If I put a polarizer or graduated filter on I obviously can't use the hood because I can't rotate the filter. So I put the thread protector ring back on instead of the hood and put my polarizer on. When I put the lens cap on it fits fine, but I noticed that the cap does not cover the aperture numbers on the lens barrel. Without the filter the lens cap goes on further and completely covers the numbers. So it seems that the filter protrudes far enough that it touches the inside of the front of the cap before the edges of the cap "bottoms out" along the edges. So if your filter is very thin the cap will go on further than if your filter is thicker (like a polarizer). If the filter is even thicker I guess the cap may not even go on far enough to hold at all, but that would be a pretty thick filter.
dkaye Posted April 7, 2016 Share #5 Posted April 7, 2016 I also leave the cap off. I find the hood so strong (and long enough) that I can just throw the camera into my bag and not worry about it. Been shooting this way since mid-June. I recently decided to add a clear filter since I found one with coatings that seem to be as good as the Q's lens. http://amzn.to/1PVn8pA ...doug
Coppereye Posted April 7, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted April 7, 2016 Thanks for the replies - I thought that I would get an email if there was a reply ( obviously something I've not set properly). It looks like the hood is going to stay on and the lens cap will go back into the box. May not use a polariser on it but I may need an ND in summer ( if we get one ) so I would sooner leave the hood on than pay for an new lens cap
Leica Guy Posted April 8, 2016 Share #7 Posted April 8, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lens cap is still in the box. Never use it. The hood does a great job protecting the front of the lens.

BUT Do you realise that with the available shutter speed range that goes to 1/16000 , you may never need use an ND to control the amount of light. That is, unless you are using low shutter speeds to be creative or to avoid unwanted shutter effects.
