jsjxyz Posted June 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) What is exposure bias in exif? How do I set it up? Just look at this picture L1046869.jpg photo - Morgan Ommer photos at pbase.com the Exposure Bias is -3, does it mean it has EV-3? All of my M8 picture has empty Exposure Bias. Pink Casper photo - Jerry Justianto photos at pbase.com Thanks, Jerry
Advertisement Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Hi jsjxyz, Take a look here Exposure Bias in EXIF??. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cbretteville Posted June 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 4, 2007 Jerry, The image on pbase says -3ev in it's exif block meaning that you reduced the exposure three stops. Email me an original jpg and I'll see what the camera actually recorded. - C
dpattinson Posted June 4, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 4, 2007 It means the photographer set the exposure override to -3 stops (underexpose by three stops I think). You can do this yourself by hitting 'set' and choosing an exposure comp from the menu that comes up. Apparently many people regularly shoot the M8 with between -0.33 to -0.66 to avoid blown highlights when using AE. -3 seems more like a wierd lighting setup, say largely dark background with person in sunlight in front. pklein Posted June 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted June 4, 2007 Some people shoot the camera at ISO 320 and use the EV adjustment to get "faster" speeds. ISO 320 with EV -2 actually gives less noise than ISO 1250 with normal exposure. Ditto with ISO 320 and EV -3 vs. ISO 2500. You have to shoot RAW and adjust the files in post processing. --Peter

pklein Posted June 4, 2007 Share #6 Posted June 4, 2007 Ah, he desaturates. That's nice to know, Jerry. I spent some time looking at a lot of Morgan's pictures. I noticed the pastel look to many of the indoor photos. So, that's a deliberate choice, and not just a result of the EV adjustment. It works nicely, and it probably smooths out some of the mixed lighting issues. He really does nice color in a world where many of us would switch to B&W. I like to play in the dark, too, so I've been learning from the people who use minus EV rather than ISO for high speed. --Peter
