sblutter Posted April 4, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been very happy with my printed output from M9P (& M-E) - up to 84" long side with a great print tech's help - pixalization whatsoever. Have had 2 big shows, am an long time M shooter etc. etc. I don't shoot for the web. I took a pass on the 240 after examining side by side RAW files. I also don't see much better IQ in 262 files (thank you Jim Arnold!) I'm finding myself shooting more & more wide open, just got a Voight 50mm 1.5 that's tack sharp with no shift (have been using a ver IV Summi 2.0's - very happily). My shooting style is totally film old school, often on tripod, sometimes w/ Viso III - either studio lit or daylight. I am not a people street shooter. Maybe I should wait another round of upgrade but thought I'd throw this out to your sub-forum: If you had to upgrade using these comparison points, what would you do? Get a new 262 or a used 240 - or do nothing? Care about: View screen Critical focus IQ (262 new CMOS an improvement?) Feel Low light (only 5% of the time & have a 5DM3 and a Sony RX100iii) Don't care about: Shutter sound Video Wifi GPS Weather seals Lens coding (shoot everything in RAW uncompressed & uncoded) Fast multiple exposures Frame lines Or, wait for a game changing monster new sensor? Money is not so much the consideration as being wasteful is. I have a ton of lenses - they last
Advertisement Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Hi sblutter, Take a look here M9 vs M240 vs M262. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
@McLeica Posted April 4, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 4, 2016 To be frank, I think you've answered your own questions....do nothing.
a.noctilux Posted April 4, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 4, 2016 Hello, As long time M9 user, I never needed to upgrade to M (type 240), but I could't resist to the M (type 262) that I did not needed neither. But when using the M 262, I do appreciate those little things: - better seen frame lines even in the dark (I had never notice this "flaw" in my older M, before this ) - the finder is easier to focus, maybe more contrast or something that I can't figure out - even if I use my digital M like film M (only look at the LCD rarely), I do appreciate the high resolution - LCD usable in sun light (to change settings or to view photos) - easy WB access when needed (I use DNG also) - very quiet shutter - far more battery capacity : everyday vs once-a-week charging Just to say that I am very pleased to use the M (type 262). In files delivered, I think that the M9 could do in 80% of them, but with less pleasure . Regards, Arnaud

Ulrik Posted April 5, 2016 Share #5 Posted April 5, 2016 For me the addition of live view and electronic viewfinder with the M 240 has expanded the usability of the system. It is much easier to use extreme wide angles with live view and the integrated electronic horizon if orientation is important for the photo. It is now very straightforward to check the focus calibration of lenses (or the rangefinder). It is now possible to use strange glass (I use the 4/100 Leica R Macro and the 6.8/400 mm Telyt here and then with Novoflex adapters).
Schrödinger's cat Posted April 5, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 5, 2016 If you didn't like the M240 files I wouldn't think you would want an M262 either. Based on your list of things you don't care about, I wouldn't think new cameras hold any value for you unless you're just really dissatisfied of the M9 screen. CheshireCat Posted April 5, 2016 Share #7 Posted April 5, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) The sensible advantages for you will be the greatly improved screen and Live View for critical focusing (especially important with fast lenses at short distances). Are these alone worth the upgrade ? My personal opinion is: yes. M240 is sensibly thicker/heavier, but you won't notice on a tripod. Battery life is increased, but spare batteries are bigger. No real advantage here.
sblutter Posted April 6, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted April 6, 2016 I think Schrodinger and Cheshire got it right. What's bugging me most is focus uncertainty which is very critical to some of my field work: https://www.flickr.com/photos/sblutter/15980265749/in/album-72157649640400787/ I've used live view for stills with the D5M3. Its pretty sweet to know for sure and confirm on a hi-rez screen at the moment - which points to the 240. I've had to abandon shots, shoot several extra and hope - or reshoot, which if done while traveling is obviated. I'm sure I'll get used to the upsized body. At the end of the day, its about output - not false loyalty to aging technology Thanks all for helping me walk through it! I bet like many of you, I'd like to get to the point when I have my perfect and last camera for life, like the M6!
rramesh Posted April 7, 2016 Share #9 Posted April 7, 2016 Actually there is one camera you need to add to your comparison. That being the Leica SL. While it does not have a rangefinder, it is a very competent upgrade.
sblutter Posted April 7, 2016 Author Share #10 Posted April 7, 2016 Just bought a 240 on Ebay from a NYC store - full warranty - $4250, like new condition Best: Black dot! You guys really helped - precise, confident focus has been this Leica man's dream for 40+ yrs. No more hoping should be wonderful Next, get a bin full of very good stuff sold. 3 film bodies, several lenses, an M-E... all in perfect shape Thanks all, can't wait! As a 6x/week exercise guy, I think I can handle the extra .2 pounds of weight To Ramesh: I'm a committed M body & lens mount guy. My 5DM3 is only used as needed, which ain't much - way too big & heavy for my style of shooting, which is a lot. With a collapsible lens (latest 50 2.8 Elmar), an M fits in field jacket pocket
