MEB Posted March 27, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) This museum is located on the campus of Michigan State University. The structure is extraordinary! There is not a vertical line anywhere in the entire building and the entire exterior is glass and shiny stainless steel sheeting. I find it very difficult to photograph and capture the feeling of the building. People either love it or hate it...no one is neutral about it. Last year Hollywood took over the building for several days to film part of the new movie Batman vs. Superman in and around it. M240-P with 28/ f2 Cron. war Posted March 28, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 28, 2016 These are nice images. I've photographed it several times but I've yet to get inside to get some interiors. I find it difficult to find a way to show it in context with the University buildings.
MEB Posted March 28, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted March 28, 2016 War, Thank you. The reason it is difficult to show it in context is that it has no context to any other buildings either on or off campus. That is one of the reasons why my wife absolutely hates it! The building itself functions as a structural sculpture and accepting it as that is why I, personally, like it. It was designed by Architect Zaha Hadid and, to my knowledge, is only the second of her designs built in North America (the first is Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art (2003), Cincinnati, Ohio, US). stuny Posted March 28, 2016 Share #4 Posted March 28, 2016 Lovely. One of the views makes me think of the Hirschorn in WDC.

Mark You are right about the context. I was disappointed by the spaces around the building and it's relation (lack of) to the surrounding buildings both academic and commercial. It appears to have been relegated to the very "edge" of the campus in anticipation of it's unwillingness to conform. As sculpture it could have been more thoughtfully placed in it's surroundings and could have created meaningful exterior spaces between buildings. Even the entrance is awkwardly placed, as if to say this building is not part of the campus.

spylaw4 Posted April 14, 2016 Share #7 Posted April 14, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that is interesting in that it was designed by Zaha Hadid, or possibly her studio as it seems to me to be very unlike most of her buildings. With her passing the world has lost a very talented architect of enormous vision.
