But to get back to the original point: I'd like to see some photos made with the APO 180/3.4 at close range to see what it renders like. I posted this series with the Elmar-R 180/4 last year, focus plane at about 2m.

Hello Godfrey,

here a try with the Apo 3.4/180 with the macro extender (of the Macro Elmarit-R 60mm), lens scale at 5m, that means about 1.6m distance. Aperture - the extender shows 4, but this is wrong. It was two half stops closed. It must be 4.8

Unfortunately quite shaky (handheld), but the quality of the lens is fine. The zigzag nib is the focus. (The boxes are not straight, but shifted.)

Actually the quality of the lens is much better than expected. The quality loss is from the untrained user. The problem with this lens is that it has no tripod plate (ok, the adapter has a tripod mount).

Usually I would do a shot like this with the 2.8/100 or the 4/80-200 - they have an option to fix them to a tripod.

Godfrey,

here the central part, unfortunately shaky, but I could not find the tripod mount for the R to M adapter.   B)

The official macro lenses, the 100 or 80-200 are much better for these tasks, especially regarding handling, but the 3.4/180 can be (ab)used as well, despite its much longer closest focus distance.

By the way, do you have a description how to get the optimal quality for this forum ? The posts did not really work the way I wanted them ...

Thanks for the photo examples!

  • The lizard is a good sample of what to expect in normal use at medium-close distances.
  • The rendering at macro focus distances with the Macro-Elmarit-R is a little harder to judge. The background box with "No. 106" on it is a bit busy at the settings you used (what was the f/number?).

Together, they show the usual results: Different distance and aperture settings produce a range of results going from pleasing to harsh, and different scenes respond differently too. It takes a lot of experience with a lens and a good bit of shooting to do a thorough evaluation.

I don't know about "optimal quality" because I'm not entirely sure how to measure it. I set my web JPEGs to fit in a box roughly 1200x1200 pixels in size (a little more or less depending upon the image format) do my final rendering with a white surround so that I see how it balances against a white page background, and add a modest white 'matte' border to ensure that the eye has enough white space isolating the image so that it can balance correctly. I post the image files to Flickr and link to the "as uploaded" resolution images from here for display. If I'm going to offer people the opportunity to look at full-resolution images, I do that via a URL vs trying to display them on the page.

Moin Moin,

I tried the Apo Telyt 180mm/3.4 with the Elpro 1:2-1:1 of the Apo Makro Elmarit 100mm/2.8

I didn't knew it would fit properly any other lens. Did you put its lens hood on the back of the Elpro or on the front ?

Sort of on the theme of 180's at their closest range, here's a handheld shot with my 180 APO Elmarit-R at f/2.8 and 1/80 sec.  Distance was 1.5m:

Scott,

would you mind describing the steps you took to bring this image to this forum ? I have tried different ways and am not really happy with the results.

An algorithm to reduce the 6000x4000 image from the SL to the format required here (without too much loss).

Thanks.     Stephan

I'm using FLICKR.  I put the 4000x6000 image up on Flickr, mark it public (default is private) and link to it using the BBCode that Flickr supplies.  Flickr and this website somehow between them do the rest.  In Chrome or in Safari, the image comes up as big as the screen that I am using will allow it to be shown.  Actually, I usually render jpgs at 2000x3000 for my own use, and those are what go to Flickr, but if there is a lot of detail, I put it all up there.

Hello:  I'm reposting this reply in-part, my response from another thread on this forum.  Thought it might be beneficial...

You can find many nice R lenses at a great price that work fantastic on the SL.  I purchased a preowned 180-APO R 3.4 from a photog/associate; originally to use on my M240.  Now using on the SL, the quality is stellar.  See attached sample I shot on-spec for the home builder.  SL with the 180 on tripod with the lens-tripod collar for optimal support. Used the 2-lens adapters stacked. Shot raw, 50 ISO, 1/5 sec @ F8, with polarizer.  Slight tweaking in LR.  The SL really opens up a wealth of lens options and I couldn't be happier with the system.
