Summicron 50/2 DR: cannot focus in close range

Hello!

I have got a Leica M3 single stroke.

My Cron 50/2 DR seems to have a problem: I cannot get focus in the close focus range.

The focus ring moves the RF, and althought it seems to work properly I cannot get focus.

Normal range is ok.

The only odd thing that I observed was that the patch of the rangefinder didn't match the vertical axis completely. This didn't happened without the googles (normal range), I mean the photos I shot in normal range (or using another lens, a Nokton 50/1.5) were ok. Only those that I shot in the close range haven't got focus.

Any Idea? Please.

Thank you!

Cheers

Antonio

The lenses in the goggles are out of alignment, as seen by the vertical being off, and the out of focus shows the horizontal is off too. I had a similar issue with the goggles on my 35 Summicron. Don Goldberg adjusted them, and the have been fine since.

A service tech will likely need both goggles and lens to adjust properly - I believe both came originally as a matched set.

There are two versions of the DR just as the rigid.   There are two versions of the eyes and they need to match the lens.

Sorry I can not remember how to tell the eyes apart.

This is the first version of DR with proper eyes.  It is heavy chrome similar to chrome auto bumpers but not so shiny.

The later version is satin  chrome, not shiny,  and the script on the eyes is different.

Hello!

Thank you very much!

TomB_tx:

I think your are right, the goggles seem to be out of alignment. I purchased it in the Leica Shop of Viena (web) ... I hope they will fix it, but I'm still waiting for their decision.

Mine, both lens and goggles, are second version:
