Does that work for DNGs or just JPG?

Just did a quick test on my M10. You can select DNG or jpeg or both for Monochrome.

The LCD display on camera is B&W. When downloaded, the jpeg is always B&W, whereas the DNG displays as colour. By then selecting 'Black & White' (in C1) the DNG image shows B&W and a wide range of controls (filters?) are available for extensive PP, if desired. My understanding of a true Monochome is that extensive PP is necessary anyway as the OOC files are very flat. IMO this is a good/desirable effect anyway for optimal image quality.

I agree that the "Enable Black and White" option in C1 is excellent and I have used this extensively.  The controls that it includes allow for adjustments that come close to the equivalent of putting filters onto the front of the lens on monochrome cameras (film or digital).  I note that elsewhere on the site there was a discussion about the differences between shooting an M10-r (I think) and the new M11-D that concluded there was not a lot of difference in the end-result (I think it was Jono Slack using Lightroom not C1).

In C1 it is possible to apply a custom style at the import stage so that images come through as monochrome immediately.  Very useful.  Maybe Lightroom has something similar?

In terms of image quality, I find that I still prefer the "look" of mono film (XP2 still widely available, even in bulk-rolls) compared with digital and comparing files from an M9 (doesn't seem to have the shoot-in-mono options of later models) with M9M, the latter has a considerable edge, especially at higher ISOs.

My original comment was about something different though.  Is there a subjective difference when taking a photograph with a monochrome camera (film or digital), knowing that the only result can be monochrome, compared with shooting a colour camera (film or digital) with the intention to convert to monochrome at PP stage?  It's about "seeing" a scene in monochrome and evaluating shades of grey rather than colour at the point of taking the image.  This can be quite a challenge.

John, I agree with your point about shooting when B&W is the only possibility. eg. Monochrome or Film camera with B&W film.

I spent the bulk (I think) of my life shooting heaps of B&W film and 'thinking' in B&W so it is rather automatic for me. Most of my cameras are still film rather than digital and I most commonly load them with B&W. I agree that XP2 does have a special look, but the higher cost of the colour chemistry keeps me from standardizing on it. I have learned to 'love' grain and so shoot a lot of conventional B&W film.
