Georg Kolbe: Memorial to Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), Taunusanlagen, Frankfurt, Germany. An intriguing work dating from 1913. Even at that time the statue was harshly critizised by antisemitic circles in Germany because of the poet's jewish descendancy and his anti-nationalist writings. It was overthrown in 1933 and archived in the Staedel Museum where it narrowly escaped being molten down during the war by being renamed "Spring Song". It was re-erected in 1947, celebrating the poet's 150th birthday. It was re-erected in 1947, celebrating the poet's 150th birthday. No reson to skip it. After 1933 it would have been looked at as Kraft durch Freude. Never heard of Kolbe before, but it's interesting to do a web search on his biography, which is a mixed bag: liked by Hitler be became a Nazi favorite, but never joined the party and seems to have provided some (weak?) support for a few friends who were placed in the Degenerate Art exhibitions. Not exactly like Hans Fallada, who in the 1930s was a bestselling novelist, as famous in Germany as Hemingway. Goebbels liked his writing and called him in for a conversation during which he asked what the writer was working on. Fallada outlined the plot, and Goebbels told him, "Great, make the hero a Nazi." Goebbels, an anti-Nazi, unlike Kolbe, went into hiding in Germany for the rest of the war. In 1947, shortly after his death an anti-Nazi novel was published, Alone in Berlin (Jeder stirbt für such allen). This book was not translated into English until 2006; into French it was translated some 30 years earlier, but still a long time since 1947.
