I apologize for the duplicate post, but in hindsight I am unsure about my previous post. The naturalistic greyscale transitions seem a bit inapropriate for the stark subject matter. On the other hand, this very contrast between form and content might be thought-provoking. Or it might just be banal. I humbly submit an alternative postprocessing without the 'mourning frame' but with a bit more contrast. I would be interested in your opinions.

Kind regards

Mathias

Just because you’re asking, I will give my opinion. Personally I’m already quite a few decades done with photography of picturesque poverty, especially when it’s done by hobby photographers. What’s the use of exposing poor and homeless people to the public, who haven’t got the choice to withdraw themselves in any kind of private sphere and for whom the street is their home. I’m actually much more interested in exposing vulgarly rich people in decadent shopping streets.

The photograph itself is indeed quite dull, more contrast did not help; without text, it bears hardly any message. Because the title gives more information, the photographed situation could be interesting and seen as a form of protest. In that case it might have been interesting to highlight the ‘Nachtbriefkasten’ (nocturnal mailbox) in the composition; some nocturnal message to policy-makers about the needs of homeless people?

I prefer your second interpretation.

Probably because it's darker, more fitting to the subject I think.

Thanks Otto for the candid reply which gives me some food for thought. I did ask.

I generally do not do ‚street‘ as a genre, and never with recognizeable individuals, due in part to the legal situation in Germany, but mostly because I feel shame at ‚shooting‘ people like wildlife. Sometimes, however, when passing by, a situation moves me in some way and incites me to take a picture. More often it will incite me to give a donation. Maybe pictures like these serve as a memento for humility and gratitude on my side. This may well be hackneyed, but it is not intended that way. Most propably I should refrain from operating the shutter in these circumstances. It is not my genre, anyway.

Thanks again, kind regards,

Mathias
