Guest Benqui Posted February 26, 2016 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2016 I really like this photo Adam. With the sun in the background the people look almost like aliens heading for you. best regards Marc
Steve Ricoh Posted February 27, 2016 Share #3 Posted February 27, 2016 I believe the smoke is actually steam - is that correct? What's going on, why so much being released? Can't be efficient!
peterbengtson Posted February 27, 2016 Share #4 Posted February 27, 2016 Many buildings in midtown and downtown Manhattan are heated (and cooled) by steam distributed in pipes under the streets. This system was originally to sell the exhaust steam from power plants after it was used for generating electricity but still had considerable heat value. The system functioned as a distributed cooling system eliminating the need for cooling towers at the power plants. Even though the local power plants no longer exist, Con Ed (the utility) is still obligated to furnish steam to these existing customers and needs to operate and maintain a system that is now well over 100 years old. You can see construction barriers in the street behind the people so this is probably a leak or repair and maintenance event.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply - I'm amazed that the utility provider is still 'obligated' to generate steam, I would have thought the law of common sense would overrule, but on the other hand it makes it a wonderland place for photography !! A miller Posted February 28, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted February 28, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, all. I really appreciate the comments. Steve - the highlights in the background are a combination of the low winter morning sun barreling through the city (I am facing due east) and the steam that was being released from underground in connection with some very significant construction that is going on in downtown Manhattan, in particular a new $1.4B subway station (Fulton Center). Thanks for looking...
