Often, I set my Q to shoot in monochrome, and until recently the viewfinder and eye piece would show images in monochrome.

Recently, a friend was playing with settings and now the displays only show full color. Any idea where/how I can get the displays to show monochrome again?

Any help appreciated!

I see you can vary the the screen mode from Mono to standard simply by using the centre button on the D pad.

To make permanent choices Mono or Colour, you may need to use the Menu button, JPEG settings, saturation....

Center of the D-pad fixes it!! (And explains how it got switched up so accidentally)

Thank you Katsanes!

welcome to this forum.

i suggest you do some experimentation because it is possible to set your camera (via the Menu, JPEG settings, Saturation...) to produce true mono JPEGS.   If you do that, you won't be able to switch them to colour in the viewfinder using the D pad.     If you don't set your camera (in the menu) to mono, then you are actually taking and saving  colour JPEGS and the D pad centre button will desaturate them just for viewing in the camera.  I have one of my presets configured to record B&W jpegs.

Whichever way you shoot your JPEGS, your raw files will always be colour.

Hope that helps avoid any surprises or misunderstanding.  Enjoy the camera.

When you toggle through the options with the D pad one of them is in fact a preview view for video. When I first got my Q I saw the video camera symbol in the top menu bar as well as video resolution. I couldn't find a way of loosing this so I reset the camera. It was by accident when fiddling with the camera I found how this had happens, pressing the D pad numerous times.

So what you are seeing is when you are in monochrome for stills and cycle through the D pad you're seeing the video preview (complete with 16:9 bars top and bottom, video camera symbol and resolution) in the top bar.

In settings you can alter the resolution, saturation and sharpening in the same way as for stills for video independently and if you select monochrome in that you could have a sort of b&w preview if you're not interested in movie shooting or the other way around. Of course there's nothing in the instructions for this just as they also don't say how to change the manual focus zoom to 6x from 3x. (when in zoom press the D pad centre button to toggle)

@Martin66, in the menu go to JPEG settings -> saturation -> monochrome.

@Lucerne - I was shooting in true monochrome jpgs, but if you push the d-pad, the video preview renders in color. This had happened and was confusing me (b/c the photos were still saving in monochrome. (Just as Simon described above.)

Thanks everyone!

There are clearly 2 preview screens, one for video and one for stills (a third that removes all the info too) as I described in my previous post. The video preview is just that, you see the aspect ratio of a movie file, 16:9 but should you press on the shutter release the camera takes a still not start the movie. The still will be captured in the way the Q is set up for stills so for soundboy, monochrome. The instant replay will be as per those settings too (monochrome) and will then revert to colour video preview.

This is logical as you don't get the opportunity to preview a video before pressing the red movie button which automatically starts the movie recording upon pressing it. The preview mode allows one to compose the beginning of your movie before starting the camera 'rolling'. FTR I never shoot movies.

I have just spent a frustrating ten minutes or so trying to figure out why on earth the camera seemed to be stuck in video mode. Thank goodness a search on 'video' brought up this thread!  Phew - I will now go back and reconfigure the profiles that I have just reset.  Almost a 'doh' moment...  ;)

I’m looking to carry out the above procedure to produce true mono jpegs. I have a Q2, firmware v1.1

When I go to Menu, I cannot find the sub menus JPEG settings, Saturation as above. So I’m guessing that the above advice is for a Q, v2.0 (I could be wrong).

So my question is: “On the Q2, v1.1 can someone define the exact settings path to make the settings which will produce true mono JPEGS?

Thanks, in advance, for helping me with this!

Suggestion: When posing a question or answering one, I think it would be very helpful if you specifically mention to which Q your are referencing, Q or Q2, and also which version of firmware you are referencing. I think it would enable all of the members on the forum to more quickly find relevant answers. Thanks again

Q2, 1.1

Menue tab 2->Photo File Format->JPG (or DNG+JPG)

+

Menue tab 2->Film Style->BWnat or BWHc (what you prefer)

The result is a b&w JPG (plus the color DNG, depends on the setting you choose in line 1)
