Help me decide which lens/lenses for the trip.

Putting a lens in socks and in shoes is a very bad idea. I've once made an experiment with worn socks and fungus. High fungus levels kept on coming back, no matter how many washes and Chlorine bleaches. As soon as the sock was exposed to mild levels of humidity, fungus was revived.

I would never, ever mix lenses and cameras with worn socks, not even worn t-shirts. And I would totally avoid stucking lenses in shoes.

I can only comment based on my own experience. In the last 10 years, having flown more than 1.5 million km, I have always packed my lenses in clean, dry socks and packed them in shoes. I've just checked all of my lenses that have travelled this way and all are completely fungus free.

I also checked my feet. They too were fungus free...

It's not the socks or shoes, it's the idea of putting lenses in the checked luggage that I'd worry about the most.

That's fair comment and I guess you have to make that personal risk assessment. I haven't had any issues, even when my luggage has been wrongly routed.
