Precautions for M6 Zinc top-plate

Recommended Posts

Eloxal is anodisation which applies to Aluminium only - Leica top plates were not (until recently) made from Aluminium so Black Chrome is applied as the black finish to black cameras unless they were Black Paint versions(see also: http://holzapfel-group.com/en/surfaces/decorative-surfaces/black-chrome.html). The finish is apparently applied onto a Nickel coating which itself is applied to the base (brass or Zinc). Eloxal is a superb and sometimes hardwearing finish - some underwater housings use it - but only available on Aluminium.

Eloxal is a German form of Anodising which can also be applied to Zinc (and Titanium etc.). But only Leica will know :)

This topic has got me interested enough to do some research (should have done that before I made my original comment ). It seems that Eloxal can be applied to Zinc but NOT Copper, as Brass is an alloy of Copper and Zinc, I think it is highly unlikely that Leica would anodise the Zinc cameras and "Black Chrome" the Brass ones. I, therefore, withdraw my comment (that is until someone comes up with a better answer).

Moral: Always engage brain before mouth is in gear :).

My M6, that I bought new in 1996 is a little "silvery" round the edges, and there is some tiny bubbling round the shutter speed dial, but I certainly don't let it worry me.  Actually, the odd thing is, I rather like these reminders of past trips with the camera.

This M6 and my 'black' lenses - all from the 1990's, get shockingly treated really, knocking about in rucksacks and on the motorcycle, whereas my older chrome Leicas, all bought used, are much more cosetted.

I have just checked the instruction booklet that came with my M6 with regards to finish.  I quote: "Body of die-cast aluminium.  Top panel 0.8mm die-cast zinc, bottom panel 0.8mm brass.  Black or silver chromium and titanium finish".  It goes on to say that the Titanium M6 has a brass "cover plate".  Make of that what you will!
