Leica finally published new software for the Leica S!

Two new tethered-workflow solutions are now available for owners of the Leica S (Typ 007).

Leica Tethered Plug-in

The Leica Tethered plug-in provides a direct link from your Leica S (Type 007) to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6 via a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed cable. The camera's shutter can be released via the plug-in, with all captured images being immediately displayed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6. It is the ideal solution for a fast and stable tethered workflow.

Leica Image Shuttle

Leica Image Shuttle 3.2 is a software package enabling you to remotely control your Leica S (Typ 007) and operate the camera's shutter release via a USB cable connected to your computer. The images captured are automatically transferred to your computer and can subsequently be saved to your hard-drive.

Not sure why but I am getting the "no camera recognized" when doing tethering and the Leica Image shuttle doesn't work

I just got my hands on a 006, can't seem to get tethering to work either... is that still the case or am I too dumb to figure it out?

This is an old thread. Do you have the most recent version of LIS?

I downloaded the 3.3 version from the owners-site just now. I do have the newest OS on my Mac (el Capitan) and the newest version of Lightroom CC.

The plugin shows up in Lightroom and supposedly works. When I connect the Camera via USB, I am able to transfer images. When I want to tether, it tells me that it cannot find a camera.

EDIT:

I did manage to get it to work with image shuttle, but not with Lightroom. But Image shuttle seems like a very clunky solution when regularly working with LR.

I don't believe that the current LR plugin works with the latest OS X version. LIS with a hot folder is your best bet. Oddly, it's much faster to do this with Capture One than LR, even though the S isn't supported.

Alright, so I did somewhat get it working, apparently there are two plugins and I didn't copy one of them into LR. I did manage to get the camera connected and firing, but no customization options. However I can adjust everything in "image shuttle" and then hit fire in LR.

While this might not be optimal it does seem to work. I'll run with it for now, if anyone has suggestions on how to work this differently it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about this confusion, the camera is brand new, I never owned a medium format camera, I never tethered before and I'm as excited as can be!

I would suggest not using the LR Plugin at all.

Use LIS as your sole camera control, importing through a hot folder into LR. I've been using this method for years with and S2 and S making tens of thousands of exposures and it works quickly and flawlessly - it's hardly clunky.

Danke für den Tipp! Werde ich direkt mal ausprobieren :) hört sich der Beschreibung nach sehr viel einfacher an!

To me the Lightroom tether works faster than Leica Image Shuttle. Direct import via LR Plug-in seems quicker than the deviation through the automated import from the hot folder via LIS. During the shoot we wait too long for the files to appear on LIghtroom. This may be acceptable (while still annoying) at a still life shoot, but photographing people, it takes just too long (to import through LIS and LR hot folder).

However, on my MacBook Pro the solution via Lightroom tethering keeps crashing the whole system. I have El Capitan and the latest LR 6.6, Leica S 007.

Leica Image Shuttle seems to be more stable, we seldom have to restart the system.

When the system crashes, it means all of a sudden the files stop coming to the computer. You cant release the shutter from LR, you can though from the camera, but it wont transport any files to LR. So you turn off the Camera, which doesnt work, so you have to disconnect the battery. You also have to exit from the tethered shooting mode in LR, sometimes you even have to quit the LR application. Then start everything from new.

I usually put the cameras auto shut-off option to "never" so it wouldnt disconnect the tether. But it seemed to me, that the connection is even more unstable at this setting, it kept crashing all the time. Maybe I am just getting paranoid about it.

Frankly this whole tether thing is not yet well developed and is no fun when you have a client behind you waiting for the shoot to run smoothly.

As for the Leica S App for iPhone/iPad, i've tried it a couple of times but it isnt stable at all. Its fun to show to people, a gadget.

Sometimes it bothers me that we're expected to pay thousands to get an empty promise of a professional system.

Maybe we're just not yet this far. Other systems I've worked with have their flaws as well.

But back to Leica S 007 tethered via LR Plug-in: Has anyone else experienced unstable connections, crashes etc? Any thoughts?

Agreed that the LR plugin may be quicker for work with people, although I've done lifestyle work periodically with LIS and LRCC where I've released the shutter from the camera instead of the app, and I've found that with the buffer it's been fine for short to moderate bursts - much faster than trying to release the shutter through the app. I shoot architecture predominantly, so I'm usually in no hurry. The main reason I like my workflow is stability. I have minimal issues - pretty much rock solid, unless I let the camera go to sleep, then restart is necessary. Instead I tend to shut the camera off between set ups, then there are no issues.
