NZDavid Posted February 14, 2016 Share #1 Posted February 14, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) There is a link at the top of the page saying "Emails bouncing. Emails that we send to you are being returned to us. If our emails continue to bounce, we will stop sending emails to you. Update your Email Address." I click on the link and it lists a totally wrong email address that I have never used and asks me to update my whole account info. As there have recently been messages appearing at the top of the forum page with "You have one new message" which turns out to be an advertisement, is this authentic? I have no idea why the forum would have a record of a totally incorrect email address for me as it is one I have never entered. Note from the admin: The message itself comes from the forum, is sometimes wrong but NO PHISHING or MALWARE. Please ignore the ads with "You have one new message" but report the URL they are pointing to. I'll ban them. Andreas
Advertisement Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Hi NZDavid, Take a look here Emails bouncing message - authentic?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Bill Livingston Posted February 14, 2016 Share #2 Posted February 14, 2016 NEVER respond to these messages! They are know as 'phishing'... it's simply an attempt to get your email address and often other personal information. They can sometimes be very convincing, thankfully, most of the time they are easily identified... and ignored.
NZDavid Posted February 14, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted February 14, 2016 What I thought, but it does look authentic. Welcome, dear visitor! Bill Livingston Posted February 14, 2016 Share #4 Posted February 14, 2016 That is PRECISELY the point...! I've had emails from my bank, complete with the logo... from my mobile phone company, all sorts. All phishing. They are very convincing. If they didn't look authentic, they would never work! Ignore! Anything genuine that you have ignored will contact you by other means, so you will not end up with any problems by ignoring a request for an email address update... Just think about it for a while... You can check your email address for the forum in your profile. So do that. i think you will find it is correct. This is likely to be scam. Do not take the risk. Check you forum settings and logged email address or contact the admin. Don't respond to these messages. If they are genuine, admin will tell you. But it I bet you will be told much the same as I have just said...!
NZDavid Posted February 14, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted February 14, 2016 Well, I logged in to profile and email settings...and the email is also incorrect. It is listed as dot com instead of dot co nz. I have no idea why that would be the case as I have received emails from the Leica forum in the past -- and I have made no changes to my profile since. Like you say, I just don't trust these messages. There are so many advertising messages pop up all the time. I would greatly appreciate more advice! Bill Livingston Posted February 14, 2016 Share #6 Posted February 14, 2016 I would suggest correcting the email in your forum profile and email settings. if the message goes away, great, it was genuine, but you handled it safely. If the message continues to appear, then it confirms it as a phishing email. If it DOES prove to be correct though, I think the forum should look at an alternative way of communicating errors like these.
pop Posted February 14, 2016 Share #7 Posted February 14, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am virtually certain that these messages are fakes. Do not click on any of those links. Do not respond. Sit tight until Andreas himself says it's ok. Which he will not, I think.
NZDavid Posted February 14, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted February 14, 2016 Thanks, I'll wait and see if I hear from Andreas. Phishing is so rife that I view any kind of communication asking for email addresses with suspicion.
LUF Admin Posted February 15, 2016 Share #9 Posted February 15, 2016 Sorry for late reply. First things first: These messages are NO PHISHING and NO MALWARE or whatever. I'll explain later where they come from (mistakenly) First of all I'll investigate where the wrong email address comes from... The ads saying „You've got 1 new message“ is a different thing - Please ignore and send me a screenshot or the web address it's pointing too. I can ban these ads and will do. NZDavid Posted February 16, 2016 Author Share #10 Posted February 16, 2016 Thanks for the reply, Andreas. I also replied to your PM yesterday. This is rather annoying! I have now tried to change the email to my correct email address by clicking on the link and trying to change email and password details as requested, but I got the message, "that email is already in use." So I cancelled it. The banner at the top is still there. I guess if I can still use the forum I should just ignore it? Other ads saying I have a new message still appear at the top as well. Apparently I've won a $3000 travel spree!
NZDavid Posted February 16, 2016 Author Share #11 Posted February 16, 2016 I tried to reset my email by clicking on profile. Unsuccessful. After resetting the password, the forum locked me out for 13 minutes. At least the new password lets me get back in but I can't add my correct email as it was before. Hmm...I wonder if my settings got all shook up by the earthquakes!
NZDavid Posted February 17, 2016 Author Share #12 Posted February 17, 2016 All working now, thanks to Andreas and also to those who contributed. The ad link has also gone -- so I guess I shall still be waiting for my winning travel spree!
