Leica Monochrom in extreme cold

I am just back from Hokkaido, Japan, where I photographed winter landscapes in very harsh conditions with my two Monochroms type 246 bodies and the following lenses: 24/3.8 elmarit, 35 1.4 FLE and 75/2.5. I thought to drop a line about the performance of the camera in very cold and snowy conditions. The bodies are weather sealed but the lenses not. I photographed all day long with an average temperature of -20 celsius. I was very anxious about the performance of the cameras. They both performed smoothly. Some time I had to boot the camera by removing the battery and reinserting it again as the live view was functioning as play mode instead. The battery lasted for all day and I had to replaced it only once. The lenses were fine and the focus ring did not become stiff. All my equipment was in an ONA bag, so not particularly weather proof. I did put the bag in a plastic bag everytime I was going from cold to hot and waited for a couple of hours before opening it. All in all I am satisfied and I believe that this was my ultimate weather test for my cameras. Friends with Nikon had more problems that I had. Here is a link to the gallery of images

Good photos.

I really liked them

PS regarding temperature, just battery is key ad having good gloves because the metal body is not that pleasing to hold at -20C...

I have been in Latvia a while back and the sea was iced. it must have been -20/-25. I dad no problems with the (then) M8, apart the battery

but I had several batteries so was all fine. In fact I had more problems  myself to stand the cold weather! :-)

Lovely images, with more than a hint of Japanese aesthetic.

A colleague related seeing his son-in-law shoot film in extreme cold in northern China some years ago.
When the roll of film needed to be changed, two things happened - plastic parts inside the camera shattered with the cold, and the photographer needed treatment for frostbite after glove removal.  Another benefit of shooting digital!

I'm glad they fixed this with the type 246 the original monochrom tends to freeze up in cold weather. Doesn't even need to be freezing cold situations, just cold. M6 used to be "the" extreme cold weather camera. The R4 R6.2 and R7 also were mediocre performers under such conditions.

These are amazing photographs. I grew up in cold weather (Russia), but have been living in Southern California for the past 15 years or so. I really need to go somewhere where there is a good amount of snow to do this kind of pictures. I'm really jealous in a good way.
