Hi kids,

At the end of the day, yesterday (US, Pacific), Adobe released The new ACR 4.1 for CS3. Besides adding functionality to a variery of new cameras including Canon's new Mark III (my new baby), it has added a new slider in the ACR dialogue called "Clarity". Something to do with adding contrast but best used at 100% view. They also made numerous other improvements in Sharpening, etc. So go and get it at:

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

(Yesterday I tried the update feature under the Help Menu and it did not find it, so you have to manually select it for now.)

Of note:

It does not support CS2. The 4.1 engine is not yet available for Lightroom but will be supported soon.

Thanks Steve. I've been looking all over for a good description of the new controls. Written, no less by, Jeff Schewe who had a lot to do with the new features.

How's your 1DMkIII ? I am very impressed by the noiseless ISO 800 and pure clarity. Any focusing issues with your sample?

Much better sharpening and contrast tools. This is the real deal. I was forced to process in Photoshop, but now I will be able to live in Lightroom.

Are you sure ....? the new sharpening tool is for "capture sharpening", which the M8 does not really need in the first place..... for sharpening for output you will probably still need PS.

Very worthy upgrade nonetheless.....thanks for the links everybody!

I downloaded the zip file and extracted it fine. Now it is sitting on my desktop but when I open it it looks like the old CS3 version. Don't I have to install it as a plug in inside CS3 ? I can never get this straight.

Anyway, can someone help me?

Rex,

Remove the old plugin at this location on your disk (keep as a back-up):

Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats

After that move the new plug-in you downloaded and unzipped to the same location and start CS3

Hope this helps

Usual health warning for PSE4 users for Mac - again Adobe have released a specific version of ACR V4.1 for PSE4, just like they did for ACR V4.0 - this will NOT work, so do not bother to download it or install it. If you do, you will get the message "File type not supported" when you try to open a DNG file. If you have done this in error, reinstall ACR V3.7, which remains available from the Adobe website. In order for it to work, you would need the update to PSE called V4.01, which is not yet released even though Adobe said May.

Rex,

Simplest way is to open CS3. Go to the upper Menu under Help>Updates. It does the work for you. You can also do it from Bridge. Cheers!

Arthur,

I heard Galbraith or one of the gurus had an issue with focus. So far I have shot only one event, about 200 images. Only 2 images were out of focus. Typically, in a shooting situation like this, I would have lost 30% of the images due to focus. It focuses faster and tracks moving objects (al-servo) like nothing I have ever seen.

800??? Try 1600, 3200! All you have to do is play with the Chromatic Noise Reduction in the new RAW to a level of about 7 or 10. (Default is 25.) I think this is due to the fact that Jeff Schewe had a lot to do with 4.1's development. He's a Canon guy that has had the III for months.
