It limits the space, thus making it a bit more intimate and the picture "uneven", this gives tension. The person, now in the middle looks more "lost". I think it is strong this way Cropping more to implement the rule of thirds, although I tried, leaves me with not enough Mpx to print at the desired scale. It is already cropped by half on a 16 Mpx APS-C (the T), and isn't my preferred way to go at the moment. Below is the full original picture, not all bad, but not that graphic strong image like above. It is more the intimate urban setting displayed, notting to guess anymore. This picture does have the rule of thirds though (not sure I should publish this, it changes the perceptions when you look at the image above again, but well... we are all here to learn and discuss) Welcome, dear visitor! With the last photo, as is, I had the dilemma that I liked the sole person (anonymous as she is) in the graphic pattern. That's why I cropped it, not to distract from it and make it a theme in the picture. The complete picture, keeps reminding me though, of HCB's style, like the one of the women on the stairs in Sconno, Italy (1951). Must have been back in my head when I shot the picture. I think everybody makes his or her personal choices when editing their pictures. I thank you both for your opinions. I always learn from these, that's why this forum is so encouraging. For both views I can have respect, but ultimately for me it is about trying to represent what I had in mind when pressing the shutter. Just used a piece of paper to crop the bottom, it looks good with the leading line emanating from the corner - but my 'eye' looks for geometry, triangles etc, and we all see differently. Steve, Geometry, triangles and diagonals are the obvious for composing the shot, I agree These steps were quite an interesting place to explore them. I took quite a lot of pictures from different angles and viewing points here. I will give another example of a composition with diagonals and triangles, to discuss. Same stairs, no people this time. And I am also willing to oblige someone else imagination.... Resolution gets too low to make a quality print now, what was my initial limit when I started to crop. In hindsight I should have used a different lens at the time of the shoot. Well..... Welcome, dear visitor!
