I'm looking to do two things:

1) clean drying marks from my films, and

2) reduce/remove dust before scanning (esp for 120 film).

I've heard of Ilford cloths, Pecpads etc but am not sure how good they are. Also, would such products work with, for instance, pure alcohol or other cleaning solutions? I would very much appreciate your experiences on these and other products.

thanks in advance

Philip

For decades I've used a soft rubber film squeegee right after hanging to remove water, and by keeping it clean have never had a problem scratching. So I don't worry about water marks.

However, I just bought the Ilford cloth for cleaning dust off my flatbed scanner. They say not to wash it, so I don't think cleaning solutions would be wise.

Thanks for pointing that out about the Ilford cloth, that's good to know.

the Gilford cloth is very good for 35mm negs; not so good for larger negs in my experience.

funny you posted b/c I just today purchased the Static Master 1C200 Static-Master Brush 1 inch for my 6x6 - 6x9 negs.  I am hoping for the best.

I HATE DUST!!

That's a funny confidence Adam :) I've also been wondering how useful such brushes are in actual use. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how it works.

About removing cleaning marks, I tried with my Kami wet mounting liquid and that removes the marks really well. But it's a bit pricey a solution so I'm wondering about alternatives. Could one use for instance purified alcohol or some mild solvent? With water one has to rub a bit which I'm trying to avoid.

Hi Philip,

For your second question I use this professional german compressor Kaiser brand (like my Leica center lab)

but you can find something cheaper here (the pistol is very useful) :

The compressor is also useful to chase antistatic dust (also to pump the tires of mountain bikes)

To eliminate antistatic dust , I put all my negative in antistatic crystal leaves.

I handle film negative with cotton gloves
