prk60091 Posted January 1, 2016 Share #4 Posted January 1, 2016 Except for the part where you're losing resolution. Not so much. Files are useable.
beez Posted January 1, 2016 Share #5 Posted January 1, 2016 Not so much. Files are useable. I suppose it depends what you're shooting for - I shoot for print publications, and 4800px and 3360px files wouldn't really cut it.
marchyman Posted January 2, 2016 Share #6 Posted January 2, 2016 Curious... What resolution (dpi) do your print publications require?
millsart Posted January 2, 2016 Share #7 Posted January 2, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Funny how I earned a living as a sports photographer with a 4meg Canon 1D for a number of years, even with some double page spreads, before then continuing to earn a living with a 8 meg 1D mkII for a few more years..... No one seemed to complain about resolution, but then again, the highest resolution option we had in those days was the $10K 1Ds with 11megs and a FF sensor. I remembering finally buying one used for "only" $6500 and thinking I scored the deal of a lifetime LOL,.....thing is worth maybe $650 these days ? Ecaton Posted January 2, 2016 Share #8 Posted January 2, 2016 I just realized, Q actually an AF M with a Tri Elmar (28-35-50) included... Happy new year! Except that a 50mm lens is not a cropped 28mm & distortion. It`s a faux tri elmar at best
beez Posted January 2, 2016 Share #9 Posted January 2, 2016 Curious... What resolution (dpi) do your print publications require? I shoot for a small, independent editorial picture agency called Polaris Images, and my pictures are used in magazines, newspapers and books. The minimum specs for files for them are 4800px on the long side, at 300px/in. I usually send them files that are 5000px @ 300ppi.
Lieberman Posted January 2, 2016 Share #10 Posted January 2, 2016 Just look at the 10 MP Leica M 8. It's not only the amount of pixels which counts!
beez Posted January 2, 2016 Share #11 Posted January 2, 2016 Just look at the 10 MP Leica M 8. It's not only the amount of pixels which counts! I agree, to a point. I had an M8 and still have an M8.2, and I was able to blow up some of the files (particularly those shot at or below ISO 640) to as big as 20" to make beautiful inkjet prints. But, I shoot 99% for publication, where the file gets converted to the more narrow CMYK color gamut, and screened with dots on output, and that process is quite different from the way good inkjet printers lay down several different colors of ink on paper to try and recreate a wide-gamut RGB file. I traded my M8 and one of my 21/2.8 Elmerit asph lenses for the Q. The M8's sensor is great up to 640, and pretty good even up to ISO 1250, but blowing the files up to 5000px from 3936px at the high ISOs (800, 1600, 3200) where I generally work, was not yielding the results I needed. It also left no room for cropping the pictures, if necessary. The Q at full resolution, meets my technical needs very well, along with all the other things it does so well.
