Jared Posted December 27, 2015 Share #25 Posted December 27, 2015 All of these are 100% crops. The shutter speed was 1/125s. What about the 50mm APO? First the full frame. Obviously, everything is going to be a touch "bigger" since the zoom was shot at just under 40mm rather than at 50. Still, it should give you an idea. Welcome, dear visitor! Jared Posted December 27, 2015 Share #26 Posted December 27, 2015 Now the center crop. By the way, the exif will say that the 50mm was shot at f/5.6, but it was actually f/8. Obviously, the SL estimates focal ratio based on brightness of the image and it's not precise. Welcome, dear visitor! Jared Posted December 27, 2015 Share #28 Posted December 27, 2015 And here is the upper right corner (not quite the extreme corner--I wanted to include a bit of the rocky outcrop) on the 50mm... Jared Posted December 27, 2015 Share #29 Posted December 27, 2015 All of these images were taken with "daylight" white balance set in Lightroom. They are all JPG's made in Photoshop from DNG's. No noise reduction. Default (low) sharpening in Lightroom. ISO 100. Focus point was about 1/3 of the way into the grape vines. I used autofocus on the 24-90, and manually set focus at f/2 using the 50mm. Oh, and here are a couple bonus pics... A slightly wider field of view (a composition I liked a bit better) taken with both the Zoom set at 34mm vs. a stitched composite of 3 images from the 50mm APO resulting in roughly a 50 megapixel file. Obviously, it's not "fair" comparing a 50 megapixel taken with a really good prime vs. a 24 megapixel image taken with a zoom, but I still find it interesting. First the full frame... Jared Posted December 27, 2015 Share #31 Posted December 27, 2015 Obviously, these are all basic snapshots rather than carefully crafted images. Composition was limited to where the winery allowed one to stand--on their terrace. Post processing was minimal--shadows are all blocked up, no real effort made to get the white balance correct, etc.--but it should still give you an idea of what the zoom is capable of at moderate focal lengths. I believe based on admittedly limited experience with this lens so far that these results are typical when the lens is used between 24mm and roughly 70mm. Above that focal length, corners seem to soften up just a bit more, but nothing intrusive. While there are differences in the contrast of fine details between the zoom and the 50 APO, I can be very happy with images made with either lens. The 50mm resolved enough fine detail that you see a bit of Moire in the tree branches. A little amount of work in LR would take care of that, of course. I did find it interesting that the zoom seems to have a warmer color cast than the 50 APO when set to the same white balance--slight magenta cast with the zoom vs. more greenish tones from the 50mm. Based on memory, I would say that the 50 was more accurate, but if I was really worried about color accuracy I would have taken a manual white balance. - Jared
