Leica Fanatic Posted December 24, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 24, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Have been toying with the idea of selling my ME for some time and have kept an eye on second hand prices. A couple of months ago they reached a low of about £1900 on eBay due to the sensor scare. Then Leica released a new sensor and the 'lifetime' free replacement promise, so prices rose to around £2500. Looking today, they have been going for as little as £1600, with one as low as £1050. Rather disconcerting and any ideas? Cheers,
Advertisement Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Hi Leica Fanatic, Take a look here What has happened to used M9/ME prices in UK?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ted Lemon Posted December 24, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 24, 2015 I see Red Dot has a couple of ME's at £2,400 and £2,700. Maybe the intro of the M262 and EOL of ME have pushed eBay prices down? Plus there are a fair few of used M9 and MM1's on the market where you can get good deals. I upgraded my ME to MP240 with the sensor corrosion issue in November and the ME exchange value was £2,300. So within the Red Dot price range (less sales commission).
earleygallery Posted December 24, 2015 Share #3 Posted December 24, 2015 Now that Leica have discontinued the M-E prices will fall more sharply I expect, and the clock is now ticking on availability of spares (Leica have stated an intended 10 year period from end of production) and more importantly, whether repair is viable or not. If you're thinking of selling you should do so sooner rather than later as a new M model is surely due soon.
pgk Posted December 24, 2015 Share #4 Posted December 24, 2015 I just picked up a battered M9 (just serviced and new sensor) for a song. Still a very good camera, as is the ME. ALL digital cameras depreciate fast although Leica do so less than most. IMO you need to either accept this fact, and be prepared for the depreciation, or look on it as an opportunity to buy superb cameras at excellent prices. I'm pleased to have bought an M9 cheap but have had to accept that my M8.2 has taken substantial depreciation.Trading up is an expensive business these days. Fine advise indeed. Bale out of the sinking ship sooner rather than later? Will do.

Bale out of the sinking ship sooner rather than later? Your camera is not an investment. Its usefulness does not diminish as new models are introduced. By selling in panic mode you only feed foolishness on your part and others', and what you spend for the next greatest only perpetuates a fool's loop. . I detect a hint of sarcasm, but yes, if you have no need for the camera sell it asap, it's only going to depreciate further the longer you hang onto it. Why ask for advice if you take objection to the answers?

Why ask for advice if you take objection to the answers? Sorry James if I came across as sarcastic, that certainly wasn't my intention. I simply agree with your opinion that selling sooner rather than later is the best idea, considering the nose dive in used prices and as you say, any upcoming new model. Hi Pico, You do of course speak the truth and usually I would wholeheartedly agree with you. On this occasion however, the purchase of another camera isn't the intention. I'm selling purely as (for some time) I've become dissolusioned with photography and have decided to call it a day. I will still be keeping my Mamiya C33 TLR for the odd moment when I do get the urge to 'fire off a couple', or perhaps write another 'Guide To The British For Other Nations'. I simply agree with your opinion that selling sooner rather than later is the best idea, considering the nose dive in used prices and as you say, any upcoming new model. No worries. It's a fact of digital cameras though, constant depreciation. I saw a nice M8 the other day, £500 in a dealers. Sell it if you're not really going to use it and put the money to better use.
