goatsby Posted December 23, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 23, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently shot some architecture-style photos which required a bit of processing to get to look straight; https://uninspiredme.wordpress.com/2015/12/23/wheres-waldo/ My question is does the version of Lightroom matter when working with DNG files for the embedded image correction? I am using LR version 4.4 and have not yet upgraded. I know there was some discussion about distortion correction in the DNG's and want to make sure my version of LR is processing those corrections. Thanks for your input and happy holidays! Adam
Advertisement Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Hi goatsby, Take a look here Does the LR version matter for image correction?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted December 23, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 23, 2015 Yes, it makes a difference. Whilst there is no real need to upgrade to the latest CC -yet-, not only the possibilities get expanded with each new iteration, there are also substantial improvements to the algorithms. One of the most visible ones was the improvement of ACR noise reduction and capture sharpening.
Jeff S Posted December 23, 2015 Share #3 Posted December 23, 2015 LR4.4 is over two years before the introduction of the Q, so there are various potential benefits for upgrading, not to mention all the added features to LR in general since that time. LR is now on 6.3 (standalone version), another upgrade beyond all the LR5 iterations. You don't mention the lens you're using, but as regards straightening corrections, it should be relatively easy using grid lines and adjustment tools in the develop module, etc., to achieve the look you want. Even with embedded corrections, other adjustments are sometimes required depending on your shooting position, etc.....later versions of LR added to this functionality. jaapv Posted December 23, 2015 Share #4 Posted December 23, 2015 Yes- there are good reasons to follow the upgrade path, even if at a distance. Algorithms get to be improved, making for better image quality, tools get expanded giving more possibilities and/or control. You may not feel a need for the cutting edge of CC, but upgrading to LR 6 makes sense.
Jeff S Posted December 23, 2015 Share #5 Posted December 23, 2015 Indeed. How thrilled would we be if Leica upgraded every camera and lens for free after they've introduced a newer, better product? With every free LR interim upgrade, that's exactly how I feel....and less than a hundred bucks for major upgrades. No-brainer. (I have yet to migrate to CC, and hope that LR continues to offer a standalone option, but I think that won't last much longer.) Jeff
