overwriting M240 metadata for non Leica lenses

Hi,

Short and sweet. Can anyone advise how I can overwrite the lens metadata created by the camera with the correct non-Leica lens details?

I have been using exiftool to catalogue images I have scanned from film and have no problem with setting the camera/lens metadata for these. I have started to go through images created on the M and want to change the metadata where I have been using a non-Leica lens but cannot seem to do this. I have searched through the forum and think this may be because on M images it is contained within makers notes and then coded?

Kind regards,

Paul

For non-coded non-Leica lenses there is no info stored in the metadata since none is communicated from the lens to the camera. I use ExifChanger which is an app using exiftool under the hood to set Exif data for non-Leica lenses. The program lets you save presets so it is easy to maintain a list for your uncoded lenses and add data quickly.

Thanks Joakim. I tried exifchanger but it never seemed to work. I am quite happy using exiftool itself and this is fine for all analogue images I have scanned. Unfortunately there appears to be a problem/conflict with the 240 metadata that will not overwrite/add non-Leica lens tags.

I've tried using Exif Editor on a Mac, that won't save edits to the M240 metadata either. I get an unspecified error message.

I've just read the support notes and quote ...

"I give up on Leica" !!

I use a little program called Exif Editor on a Mac and it works beautifully with no problems.

If you have the lens code set manually in the camera, or forget to change the setting from a previous coded lens, the metadata records that lens.

I use Lenstagger plugin in LR which calls exiftool. It is simple to use however keep following in mind.

- don't create virtual copies before correcting lens metadata since the virtual copy's metadata is separate in LR and uneggected by this plugin. After lens tagging you can create virtual copies and it will carry correct metadat.

- use closest lens tag while shooting so that it is easier to identify later for lens tagging.

I don't own the 240 but the 246 (and M9) and I have no trouble updating Exif but maybe there is a difference between the metadata handling between the 240 and 246 even if that sounds very unlikely. Not sure if it helps but the fields I set in ExifChanger are ExifAuf.LensModel and Exif.FocalLength, this works well and I see the values I add in other software. I did find another field that I haven't seen before named Exif.LensSpecification that seems to contain the lens I manually coded in the camera and that can't be changed for some reason. Since I usually don't set a code manually for uncoded lenses I assume this field is normally empty. Anyway LensModel and FocalLength works fine for me and as I see it are the only ones I need to set.

I too have long used EXIFChanger on the Mac, working fine with DNG files from M8, M9, and M240... and S2 as well since I use Pentax lenses on it sometimes. I use ZM and Voigtlander lenses often on the M's, and like to have the EXIF report correctly, so I make the changes before importing in Lightroom. I was unaware of presets, so I'll have to see about that... :)
