I think the 'cron has been getting some well earned praise, but I decided to pull the trigger on a 2nd hand 'lux at the weekend. Have not had much chance to put it through all its paces but here are some test images at 1.4, 2.8 and 4 (edit: could be 2.8 looking at the difference in shutter speeds) if my memory has not gone completely to pot. No coding, C1 and web conversion with CS3; hand held and no tripod

Jarle if it is mostly people shots i would go Lux , if it is landscapes and such than the Cron. Really a simple way to put it there both extremely good lenses . The cron will be sharper wide open and across the frame at F2 the Lux will be sharp wide open but will fall off in the corners and has a more delicate look than the cron wide open. At around f4 they really start to look almost the same. the cron will have more contrast wide open than the lux. So really depends on what you like also obviously the 75 lux is bigger and heavy and stiffer to focus the cron is smaller and lighter and has a smoother focusing ring. Tough call i went Lux with a 90 apo to get that cron look.

I would say buy the Lux try it out and it can easily be sold , there getting hard to find and if you can get a nice price than jump on it and try it. I really love this lens

Jarle,

I think it depends on what yow want to use the lens for. I like the extra stop and in my big hands the weight difference between the 'lux and the 'cron is not really an issue. I don't find the 'lux that hard to focus with the magnifier and I like the out of focus better than that from the new 'crons - but this is a very personal judgment. There are a lot of fans of the 'cron and in many respects using with digital may remove some of the stop advantage from the 'lux BUT I still use my film Ms.

Of my currnet lens collection, I think my 2 lens walkaround kit will be the asph 24 / 2.8 and 75 / 1.4, replacing my 90 apo 'cron

Bottom line is that both 75s are excellent, the decision may well be as much down to availability and price rather than personal taste.

Both of these are the Lux at F4. No airbrushing here either which is something i would do to deliver

I have more trouble deciding on the Nocti more than any lens, some backgrounds look dreadfull with that lens. But it can also look awesome

"If you want to shoot brides, get the Summilux, if you want to shoot coal miners get the Summicron."

I can't remember where I heard this (FM perhaps) but I think it holds true. I have the Summicron and while it's fantastic if your shooting male or child subjects it is a little unflattering for shall we say ladies with slightly less than youthful radiance. :o

That being said, I have a love hate relationship with the cron, love the size, focus, weight and hate the fact I should have bought the Summilux for €1200.

However it has been growing on me over the past few months and I'm a little confused as to which I'd really prefer .

it is not really all that big & balances well on the M8

I think the main downside of this lens is the older design that is a bit more prone to CA from high contrast edges wide open ...the 'chron uses an ASPH design and is less prone to this problem, which is a simple fix in post

the advantage of having f1.4 is real for me & even if I don't use it all that much, it is nice to know that it is there

some examples

the rendering of OOF areas is superb ...I love the look of the 75 'lux which some describe as magical

taken at f2.4

stopped down a bit the lens gets even sharper

taken at f3.3

this lens continues to render well stopped down a good deal

taken at f8.0

larger versions of these & many other samples can be found here

both the 75 'cron and 'lux are outstanding lenses and in short supply

if the 'lux is available at a good price, I would jump on it ...if you don't like it you can probably sell it and make a small profit given the way the Leica lens market has been lately, though the price you were quoted seems a might steep

hope this helps

I generally lean to the 'lux side (I have a 35 1.4 and a Noctilux), but must add that I have thoroughly enjoyed the 75 'cron during the short period that I have been shooting with it. Here are a couple of examples which, to my eye, illustrate that the OOF area can be both interesting and pleasing with the 'cron.

Congratulations!

I can get a brand new in Scandinavia - should i buy it or go for the cron, as the production of lux has stopped?

Køb endelig Lux'en (Do buy the Lux). It balances very well with the M8, and it is the number one portrait lens on the M8.

I got one and am very happy I did. For me this is the longest lens that is practical on the m8. Get the magnifier as well. I got a japanese version on ebay from hk supplies works fine and nice and cheap. Get the lux while you can as it seems to be drying up and getting more expensive on the used market. David

The Lux has a very interesting property: wide open it is morbid, with incredible OOF areas and very sharp in the shapest plane; but stopping down the lens is very contrasty and sharp. Said in another way, wide open is more like the Noctilux, but stopping down it is like a modern ASPH lens. Two different lenses for different purposes. It is very versatile.

Portraits with the 75lux under f2 are a real treat. I believe this was at f1.4. The background just drops right out of the image. Having the 75lux on the M8 made it much easier for me to finally sell the DMR as it was hard to think about giving up the 80lux.
