steve70 Posted December 10, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, Just got my new "Q" (Also have an M240, 246 and the D-Lux so I know Leicas. I have notices that if the camera is on "P" mode, there is no easy way to increase or decrease exposure values other than programming the FN button for exp compensation. The problem with this is that you have to move you eye away from the camera to see the FN button, possibly loosing the "Shot" On the D-Lux exp. comp. is easy, but not on the Q. I can't believe that on a camera in this price range they do not have an easy function for exp. comp.! And, you can use the main wheel for exp. comp, but on "A" priority only. If I could return this camera I would, because as a "Street" camera, without the easy accessibility of being able to change exp. on the fly, this camera is useless. Hopefully they will come up with a software upgrade to change this.
Advertisement Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Hi steve70, Take a look here Exposure Compensation with Q. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lucerne Posted December 10, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 10, 2015 Using your camera on P mode and also attempting to compensate seems contradictory. I've taken 1000 images this week on the streets of Mumbai. I have set ISO to auto with a sensible upper limit. Shutter Speed dial to A. I choose an appropriate aperture for each shot. The camera hasn't failed to work out an optimum combination and ISO has remained low, but the compensation dial is fully functional and I have used it when lighting has to be manually compensated. Give it a go! The Q is a revelation. I've brought my M9 as well, but only taken it out once.
Msohio Posted December 10, 2015 Share #3 Posted December 10, 2015 Completely agree with Gordon. A mode with Auto ISO and change f-stop as needed. Street I use f/5.6 or 8.0. I use the exposure compensation dial if needed for a shot that I have time to adjust, but I can fix anything close in Lightroom. I shoot DNG for maximum alternatives in PP. steve70 Posted December 10, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted December 10, 2015 For Mike, Funny, I am from Novelty, Ohio. I still think that the camera should have that exp. compensation on any mode, except for Mof course. All of my other equipment has that option, including my Nikon D810. For street and off the cuff quick grab shots "P" is usually the way to go, and the ability to do a quick exp. comp. without taking eye off finder to me is paramount. But than I am spoiled I guess! Thanks
Msohio Posted December 11, 2015 Share #5 Posted December 11, 2015 More than funny. 74 Years ago I was born in Novelty, Ohio which had for decades the smallest US POst Office in the USA as measured my square feet. Less than 1,500 residents back when I lived there. The Q is the only camera I have that is not a Nikon DSL. I must say I really like it for travel and street. Quick shots of exceptional quality. And very stealth like.

First I set the speed, mostly I know what I want and select the f-stop as well, Auto Iso works perfectly and AF is so fast, even in bad light, that it is a pleasure to work with. With the experience of how my other cameras work I tried to compensate high contrast situations via FN-button. But in most cases this was not at all necessary, because the settings of the Q seem to be different. The only thing I noticed is that it is helpful to push the dark parts a bit. Here there seems to be less freedom in pp whereas there is more freedom in the highlights. Knowing this it is very easy to do street with this camera, The high ISO results are quite satisfying and the rest of noise can be handled easily with a good denoise software. Enjoy your camera, it is a different tool with lots of comfy features.!!
