Hi to All,

i'm actually new to this forum and I'm looking for someone's help.

i have recently ordered a new Summilux 21, but due to the high value, i want to protect it with a filter.

Now i'm a bit lost, since i want to buy an original Leica.

It's clear to me that the size shall be "series VIII". But which type of filter should i pick up?

The UV/IR works fine only on the M8, isn't it? but it's the only one i can easily find on the web...

Thanks,

Donato

If you want original Leica UV you may have to look for second hand.

I suggest B+W, they makes both UV (010) and protector (007) filters in series VIII size.

Getting one may depend where you live or can order without hindrance, may I suggest http://foto-huppert.de/ whom I highly recommend.  I don't speak German but managed to complete the transaction without any problems (protector 007, series VIII).

I agree with Mladen.

Do not buy an original Leica but a B+W Series VIII 010 UV-Haze x1 MRC Black Filter #98897 which is what I use.

New series VIII filters are now quite hard to find so I bought a second one when I could as I was told that production was patchy if not to be discontinued altogether by B+W.

Good luck.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

If you use a filter with this lens can you also use the hood over the filter?  I borrowed the 21 lux for one of the analogue classes and it didn't look like a filter and the hood could be used at the same time, but there were no filters available for me to use anyway.

The drop in filters in the Summilux are placed between the lens lens front rim and lens hood.

Once the lens hood is screwed in place the filter is secured.

I buy my filters either from Huppert in Germany or from the US eBay dealer "buyphotogear".

Both are phantasmic to deal with, fast and professional.

The eBay seller above sometimes has strange filters available at big discounts.

When I bought my VIII contrast filter set, I got lucky and could pick up the entire set from a special order another customer made with a German camera shop and then stepped away from the purchase.

I was told that these series VIII filters (B+W) are now exclusively special orders.

The 21 Summilux is one of the lenses I use a filter on at all times - not because of value - I use lenses with higher value without any filter - but because the front element of the Summilux is a pita to clean while a flat filter is so much easier to wipe off rain drops and gunk.

I use a B+W 007 filter or a B+W 022 yellow filter in daylight.
