Leica SL a real camera for the pro.

I'm surprised you saw a delay on the EVF, and wonder if either the camera had "Exposure simulation" switched on (though its setting is off at start up), which leads to EVF lag in low light, or the camera was faulty. I've just checked mine again and can see no delay at all - no football fields to check, but swinging as fast as I can across the room shows no time discrepancy between what my left and right eye see. This isn't a matter what is an acceptable lag, I just don't see any at all.

 

I'm not denying your experience, just that it doesn't match mine.

 ditto ....... and as I have always maintained, half an hour in a dealers is not a good way to trial a camera ..... it tends to exaggerate your preconceptions ..... you have no idea if you have the optimum settings and unfamiliarity with the controls etc. rapidly leaves you feeling 'what's all the hype about ?' and this piece of cr*p isn't for me ...... it doesn't work right ......

I was using the SL from the shop so I hope they had it switched in such a way, that the camera looks its best. I made the comment to the shopkeeper and he recognised my comment. As I said. To much delay for me.

Have you ever worked with any of the S models? The SL with its control setup feels most similar to them, and not much like the R or M. 

But, eh? It didn't appeal to you ... no problem. 

 

I am delighted with it, and the more I use it the more I like it. I have no problems with the grip, or the crisp edges, or the controls. It's a totally different camera from my M-P or X or R8 or Leicaflex SL, and a very fine Leica. 

 

BTW: When I tested one at the dealer, before they were released, the first thing I did was to reset the camera to factory defaults. Demo cameras at the dealership and in the hands of the regional technical representative are always being tweaked around as customers try out different things. You can never tell what the camera is like coming out of the box without doing a reset of all controls.

No I did not have used an S model before, nor had I one in my hands. It's to expensive for me.

 

I am glad it appeals to you. The more there are sold, the better it is. But not my camera. Still I am very pleased with my M.

 

And o.k, I will test the SL again in the Netherlands to see if the viewfinder has no delay with another setting.

I rather like it - it sits in my hands well.  In terms of styling, I find it very similar to an M body, but with a built in grip where the battery lives. 

 

Where initially the SL looks a lot like a Sony A7, it is very different in real life. The A7 was always too small in my hands, whereas holding the SL, the top dial, selector wheel and shutter release all sit in just the right places for me.  If you want sharp edges, try the M Edition 60.  I love my M cameras, but ergonomics didn't really feature in the design - feels like picking up a bar of soap after using the SL.

 

I wouldn't change either design - they look fabulous.

I find it very ergonomic. Everything I need to work with falls under my fingers easily as I hold and move my hands around the body. Now that I've arranged the controls to work as I want them to, I use them without thinking. 

 

That's probably the key. Until you understand the short press—long press control syntax and have arranged the configuration to suit you, it appears difficult. It is a subtle camera that rewards some time spent to understand its nuances.

I can understand the hard edges issue. But I'm unlikely to carry mine around for any length of time, as I use it mainly for shoots when I'll put it down frequently to fiddle with lighting or other set ups. I don't like neck straps, so I've fitted a hand strap that makes holding the camera by the grip a piece of cake, with no more pressure from the edges on my hands at all.

I tested the SL and didn't notice any appreciable lag.  Same goes for the Q.
