M or R macro for SL?

absolut right; I could compare this "M-Macro" with APO-50 at short distances, the APO was far better...

The data sheet of the Macro-Elmar-M doesn't show MTFs für short distances, only for infinity.

The SL needs a better solution for Macro!

The solutions are already there if photographers know how to adapt virtually any close focus or macro lens or decent enlarging lens to a suitable bellows. And don't underestimate the humble Leitz Elpro achromatic c/u lenses which can provide superb results when used with standard 50mm to 135mm focal length R lenses. There is much to commend using manual focus for close-up imaging - particularly for static or slow moving subject matter.

Posted this elsewhere but thought it apropos for this thread.

Leica SL + Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm + 2x Extender R

ISO 400 @ f/16 @ 4.0 sec

I'm estimating about 1:1.8 magnification, with about 4" of working space.

I'm estimating about 1:2.5 magnification, with about 4" of working space.

Edit … My calculations are incorrect … apologies

The actual measurement of Astro Boy's eyes, pupil to pupil, is 9mm. On the image, that distance fits 4 1/6x on the long edge of the image, which multiplies out to 37.5mm. That means magnification is actually 1:1.042 or so.

A lot of very helpful comments, thanks to all. No one is speaking up for the 90 Macro-Elmar M vs the 100 macro Elmarit-R. Is that because it is not a "proper" 1:1 macro?

I'll speak up for it

It's great - probably sharper than the 60 (I don't have the 100) - and with the modern macro adapter M it does a grand job . .  but it's quite fiddly to use, and I must say I usually end up going back to my lovely 60.

I shoot a lot of macro with the 100mm R and love this lens. Another example shot with the M240. The 2nd image is my first shot taken with the SL

I'm not sure I approve of Astro Boy . .  but at least it's not that damned Zenith watch that I drool over each time I see it!

Yesterday I tried the 90  M-Macro on the SL and was pleasantly surprised at my results.

Also was interested to find that I was able to use the 90mm without extending the front when I had the macro adaptor on and use it as a 90mm lens.
