Table top tripod and ball head for Q

I am planning on getting the Leica table top tripod. My question is, which ball head do you suggest? Reading reviews of the tripod, several people said they got the Really Right Stuff BH-25 ball head. I called RRS and they said I would need the BH-25LR, the QR clamp and a reducing bushing for a package price of about $215. I see I can order the Leica Large ball head for about the same price. Which head would you recommend? It looks that the Leica adds a few more inches of height so that might be useful for macro work and general convenience. Comments, please?

I've been using the Leica tabletop tripod and large bullhead for almost 40 years.  The large ballhead does provide a few more inches in height and that will help when you use the tripod against your chest when nothing else is nearby.  The added height isn't an issue as you can take the two pieces apart for travel.  RRS makes great stuff but for me the table tripod/ballhead make a super combination.

I wouldn't put my Q on that little plastic tripod, perhaps a light P&S but not the well made, solid Leica Q which IMHO too heavy for that little plastic head. I have RRS BH-25 with several heads and they are super solid but I really don't use my Q on a tripod and keep it in it's leather case and use the tripod with other heavier cameras and either wide or tele lenses. I have always admired the workings of the little Leica tripod too.

I use the FLM CB18 E Ballhead on a Cullmann Magnesit Copter, small and rock solid Combo for Compacts like the Q or the RX1. I was looking for something small to fit in the front pocket of my Hadley Small and for just around 50,- € it is a no brainer.

Look at the Monix tripod, still around new, but can be had for a song on Ebay.

A brilliant piece of German post war engineering, such a shame that the Q doesn't hav a cable release socket.

Opps I just read what I wrote, what I meant was I have a RRS Pocket Pod with several heads... a screw in platform, arca swiss clamp,  as well as the new micro ball. Though I have not used my Q on it, it is definitely up to the task of holding a Q.

I have owned and used the Leica table tripod and large head for years. It is exemplary. No other head that I have used locks so quickly and positively as the Leica head. For compact cameras I also use the Manfrotto Pixi. It is strong, light, compact and very affordable. A newer version is due out any day with small extendable legs which will aid levelling on uneven surfaces. That could also be a contender.

Do you know that it can take the weight of the Leica Q.  It looks very useful for travel.

Thanks.

While watching the Minox tripod video I was thinking it would not work for my RB67 just before they cut to a shot of an RB67 on the tripod with a warning that maybe it wasn't good for a camera that size.  Put a smile on my face.

I have a heavier duty Gorilla Pod (SLR version?) with a Manfrotto ball head.   It will work fine with the Q.

The setup I've been using for a little over a decade, both as a tripod in a conventional sense but also as a chest pod, consists of the following products:

Manfrotto tabletop tripod legs or Really Right Stuff tabletop tripod legs

Manfrotto extension column

Whatever mini tripod head you want--I'm currently using a RRS BH-25 with platform

This setup is extremely light and compact. It allows me to comfortably place the camera on my chest and still look through the viewfinder, or use the whole thing as a short monopod, tripod, or wall tripod. It can stay in my bag and not weigh me down. I don't always use the extension

I had the leica tabletop for a year and don't know why everyone is crazy about it. It's solid and has a red dot, which is great, but it doesn't work for me ergonomically.

Have a look at Manfrotto MTPIXI-B.  I added a small QR to the ball.  It is usefull for Q and in a pinch M too.  Not anything bigger.

I used this tripod with every camera I own, even up to a RZ67II. Stability is fine as long as you keep the weight roughly above the centre, but with the Q it is no problem going portrait.  As the feet screw very solidly into the head, the only problem is the head. there are two verison, the early glossy one where the head has a bit more movement and the later dull one, where the head is more stable.

I inherited the glossy one from my grandfather, who bought it in the early sixties for his Minox A. Slipping a coin (preferably one German Mark, one Euro might do?) into the thickest leg helps tightening the head a lot, but it is not essential.

I'm adding an image to go along with my earlier post.  A unique aspect of the Leitz table tripod legs is the ability to fix them in an infinitely variable arrangement to each other.  This can adjust for surfaces which aren't level, to support a long/heavy lens, etc.  It also helps if using the tripod on the chest.

There aren't very many small tripods I would feel comfortable with a set up like this.

Hmm, makes me think I could put my Questar on it - would be useful maybe when the supporting surface isnt horizontal.

Thank you, everyone, for your comments. I ordered the Leica tripod and head and it arrives tomorrow. I hadn't thought of using it as a chest pod so that will be useful - will try it with my 15x50 binoculars too which really need some support.

Large or small? I just realized that this small tripod head comes in a long (tall) version as shown in Beauport's image above as well as a short (small) version. 14110 vs 14108. Which version (or both!) do people recommend for use with the table tripod?

It would be more compact and lighter to use the small but the tall one 14110 might be easier on the back and neck.

  • 1 month later...

 I use the

Leica Tabletop Tripod with Folding Legs (1/4" Screw)

B&H # LETT MFR # 14100 with the large ballhead, it does great.

I even use it it with de nikon D800 and heavy primes and it does not move.

It is solid and easy to carry anywhere.

I tried to upload pic but can't find how this works here...
