M8 shutter noise too loud?

what would be nice is a measurement in comparison with earlier Ms and maybe a nikon and Canon or two.

The initial clack is the part that IMO should be isolated and compared.

It then would be possible to get a caliper on this problem.

The M8 measures at less db then the Canon 5D. I think it is the length and unusual sort of sound after the clack that draws attention and makes it seem louder and more intrusive then the measured numbers would indicate. In a really quiet room it is quite a step back from the film M's. However, I very rarely shoot in an environment quiet enough where it would make any difference.

Even so, wouldn't it be good if the M8 had an M7 whisper quiet shutter?

I agree entirely. Anything that can be done to make the current shutter quieter should be done. However I do feel that all the noise we make about the noise the shutter makes blows the situation out of practical proportion.

Thanks for the responses.

Leica Ms' are often used in more personal situations, or situations involving people and emotions, that is where Leica Ms excel. By having a clacky shutter (or what ever after-sound associated with shutter release), I think the qualitie of Ms have been compromised somewhat. Of course taking scenery or still life pictures loud shutters don't really matter. I am also not sure if a new firmware will subdue the noise in any measure.

However, all these said, M8 is still an enjoyable camera.

Sorry to repeat myself, but the shutter is a marginal issue compared to the re-cocking noise. I've put up a page that gives my view at: Leica Shutter Sound

I can't make the link direct to the recording here, but even visually it makes sense.

This recording contains the shutter sound for a Leica M6TTL, followed by a Leica M7 (both set at 1/60th), followed by a Leica M8 on the B setting. The re-cock sound of the M8 follows two seconds after the sound of the shutter.

The sound waves have the structure shown below.

My assessment (and I'm NOT a sound specialist) is

- the M7 sounds quietest because it has the SHORTEST duration.

- The M8 sounds loudest because it has a longer duration and is slightly more complex (notice the two peaks).

To my ear the re-cock sound of the M8 is the real problem. Separate the two sounds, and the camera becomes much more useable in quiet locations, because you can wait for an appropriate moment to re-cock, or put the camera under a garment. This is something all M film camera users have been doing for years. I want to be able to do it again!
