Snap on cap instead of Leica one

Is this ok or is there too little clearance between the threads and the glass for a snap on cap? By "snap on" I actually mean the pinch kind. I don't like the stock cap and would prefer to use a generic one much like the ones from Canon or Nikon but I don't want to risk scratching the lens with it.

To be safe, I will add a 49mm B+ W clear filter to the front.  Then I can still use either a snap-on lens cover, or the lens shade that is supplied with the camera.  I also have a 49mm wide-angle collapsible black rubber shade which I think is less prone to being caught on people or objects near my camera and it costs very little.

The shade actually has a circular profile.  Something around 60.5mm .  Visit a second hand camera store and ask to go through their oddments boxes.  You'll probably find a cheap end cover.

Good idea, thanks

You could try one of these - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/475567-REG/B_W_65030522_300_60mm_Push_On_Lens.html

It is push rather than clip on but would be a nice alternative to using the original cap,

For my part, I just use a B+W clear filter and leave the hood permanently attached. That way the camera is always ready and I just give the filter a clean with a lens wipe every so often.

My issues with the cap that comes with the camera are:

  • it's huge. With my M lenses (and lenses for other systems), I take the cap off and place it in my back pocket. This one is at times uncomfortable, and on more than one occasion I've sat down with the cap in my back pocket. It makes its presence known. :)
  • It's a large Leica cap. Replacing any Leica cap is absurdly expensive; this one probably even more so.
  • The gaps at the top and bottom of the lens (the flats on the lens hood) trap dust. In general I wouldn't say this is a problem but I spent last week shooting in a woodshop and there was more dust and chips in these gaps than I was expecting--more than there was elsewhere on the camera.

Anyway, I purchased this cap on Amazon. It's a little fiddly to get it in and out of the lens hood, but with about 2 minutes of practice it's easy enough. Don't know whether I'll tether the lenscap or just take the tether off--probably the latter. But I thought I'd point everyone toward an alternative cap should they want one.

It does not seem to touch the glass.
