Leica M prices body and lenses

In Norway, some dealers, including the official importer, are as of this morning selling Leica M bodies and lenses with heavy discounts. For example, the Summilux-M 50mm is on offer with 33 % discount or about 2 600€ including 25 % tax, about 1 000€ below German price. Some lenses are discounted even more (up to 40 %). Also the M-P is heavily discounted, so if you bought one last week you have lost about 1 500€.

Any idea what is going on? Has anyone seen the similar massive price cut in other markets?

There have been discounts recently in the UK – both 'official' reductions and other ad hoc sale prices – but not on the scale you indicate. Maybe the Norwegian importer is sitting on a lot of stock and needs to offload it quickly?

Yes, this appears to be at least part of the story it seems. Leica M is not selling, and possibly one major dealer is offloading stock. Noctilux is down about 4000 Euro. The discounts offered by the official importer is lower. I see that Leica M-P also is bundled with a lens and discounted by 1 500 € or so and this is listed as "News" so perhaps there will be similar campaigns elsewhere also.

You haven't lost a dime unless you sell it. Which implies you purchased it as an "investment", which is silly for a camera. Especially a digital camera. This doesn't mean it doesn't sting to read this. Even worse with that tax rate.

In my world as an economist a fall in market value is a loss, albeit not a realized loss, just like I have lost many if my share portfolio is woth less this week than the previous week. However, I agree fully that an M is a consumption good and not an Investment good, so perhaps one should think about this differently at least over a longer time period.

Prior to the launch of the SL some UK dealers were behaving in an uncharacteristic way and selling a lot of "Demonstration" lenses.

The SL has only one native lens that will be released with the body, with a second coming later in 2016.  Not sure the sale of "Demonstration" lenses is correlated to the SL release.  I was at PhotoPlus Expo last month, my 35mm Lux worked very nicely on the SL with the adapter.

Are these discounts applied to Brand New In Box stock or floor model demos?  I was able to convince my local Leica Store to take an additional 11% off the 12%, for more or less a brand new lens he had displayed for less than a week.

Brand new stock. M240 and M-P were officially reduced by £500 during Sept/Oct and most dealers are still discounting these models from RRP. Other models such as the M-E are also being heavily discounted and at least one authorised dealer had the M-A available with a £300 discount. I get the impression that the M system is very slow moving at present.

We are seeing just a bit more than that in the states, about $1,000USD or approx.  £650.

Current promotion by Leica:

12% savings on all Leica Photographic Products*

Leica Camera is pleased to announce a consumer promotion to

compensate for the current strength of the US Dollar against the Euro.
This promotion runs from May 1st, 2015 through November 30, 2015.

I suspect that part of the issue is that Leica has, apparently, been requiring dealers to carry minimum levels of stock.  This is fair enough, really; If I see a camera store with a Leica logo, I usually won't bother going in because I can bet they will have little to no stock - they just can't afford to carry stock, or they refuse to.  If I'm wandering a city and I see a Leica store, I will go in; they're nice places to be, and they usually have lenses I haven't tried and the staff is friendly and happy to chat and let me try stuff.

That level of investment in stock is hard to achieve, unless you're a Leica Store ...

Now, if you do carry the stock, and a new model is round the corner, you need to dump it quickly.  Inventory on the shelf is worthless unless it is going out the door.  So, what we seem to be seeing is reductions in prices from Leica, coupled with dealers reducing stock.  M stock ...

When I purchased my M at the end of September this year, the owner of the Leica Store said that since the 12% promotion has been in place he can't keep the "Must Have" items in stock.  They either fly out within a day or two and then are on back order with no idea when they will see additional allocation.  My M lasted 2 days in his store before I grabbed it, he was surprised it was still there.  There was hardly any new stock available at 28/35/50mm for Crons and Luxs with the exception of a Leica referb and floor samples (if they hadn't been sold already).

I went on the site you posted and compared lenses and cameras to prices here in the US and they are all higher in your Norway site.  I see no evidence of discounting here or evidence that the sky is falling.

Rick

You have to substract 25% MOMs taxes as the items are exported!

In my world as an economist........

An economist! And you haven't noticed we are in the run up to Christmas and the rest of the retail world is discounting and having sales?

It is staggering to take what is a regular discount cycle on bodies and lenses and equate it to 'trouble'.
