hoppyman Posted November 9, 2015 Share #1 Posted November 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am in the process of retiring my S2, replacing it with the Typ 007. I had a first photoshoot in studio yesterday and as expected there are difference in operations over the older camera. With the S2 shooting DNG and JPEG I used a CF card and an SDHC card and the camera set up so the DNG files were written to the CF card and the JPEGs to the SDHC. That suited me very well with the CF card being much faster to write to. The only option I see in the Typ 007 menu is for Storage backup ON or OFF. With ON I got all files in both formats written to both cards. Off as far as I know means the second card is use for overflow but the camera wants to use the SDHC card first. I know that the buffer is much different to the old camera but I wanted to use the much faster CF cards that I had invested in.Can any other Typ 007 owners advise me if I have missed something or this is the only behavior possible with current firmware. Advertisement Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Hi hoppyman, Take a look here s (Typ 007) functions assistance please. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest chipcarterdc Posted November 9, 2015 Share #2 Posted November 9, 2015 I'd be interested in the answer to this too: I'd also like to be able to set it up to write DNGs to CF first, then only use the SD as overflow (my CFs are much faster than my SDs). To date, I cannot figure out any way to set it up to do so. Seems like a silly oversight by Leica.
jip Posted November 9, 2015 Share #3 Posted November 9, 2015 SD are becoming standard and have equal speeds these days. I'd advise to buy a fast SD card and use it as your main card, and use your 'old' CF cards as backup cards. With Backup ON.
hoppyman Posted November 9, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted November 9, 2015 Yes understood. I have about 16 16GB 45MB/s SDHC cards because I had the M as well and M9 before that. Yes there are faster ones available now. But I had constant buffer problems with the S2 with these.. When I contacted Leica Camera on this it appeared that the S2 may not support the latest standards/speeds there I invested in two expensive 32GB 120MB/s CF cards to solve that. I would just as soon keep using those in the new camera rather than buy more if I can. Maybe this will be addressed in a future firmware. I can't imagine that the S Typ 007 will be less capable in this regard than the old technology S2. I have only shot about 250 exposures with it thus far with much to learn of course. The writing of both formats to the same card uses up space and the current Lightroom CC version (I need for the camera ) has issues with their current defective Import module . That is meant to be fixed in their next update.
albireo_double Posted November 9, 2015 Share #5 Posted November 9, 2015 I was advised by the Leica sales rep for the S system to use the Sandisk 95MB/s SD cards to avoid problems, after I had two corrupted files when I used a slower (45MB/s) card in the camera. I haven't had any problems since I heeded his advice. As far as I've gathered, yes, the camera wants to write to the SD card first.
tom0511 Posted November 9, 2015 Share #6 Posted November 9, 2015 During a Demo of the S007 the Leica guy told me that the SD card is now the primary card and this was a change from the S006.
hoppyman Posted November 9, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted November 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes that is what the instruction book says as well. The camera is very new to me of course. However I have at least 3 and maybe 4 more (mainly studio fashion) shoots scheduled for the rest of this month. So I expect to be more familiar with it over those next maybe 1000-1500 exposures. After these next few weeks I thought I might share some personal comments on differences I have found in my use. What I'm wishing for is the same storage options that my S2 offers. Maybe in some future firmware update. I will probably just need to get some newer faster SDHC cards for this camera. This is a first world problem ;-)
mjrp Posted November 10, 2015 Share #8 Posted November 10, 2015 Hi I was a little frustrated with this too as I have higher speed cf cards from using the 006 but just bought some more sd cards. It's interesting to note that the 007 will only record 4k to the sd cards so there is obviously a higher transfer rate going on to the sd cards. Anyway, buying some new cards solved the problem for me. Enjoy using it, superb camera although for studio work with strobes I still use the 006 at base ISO, just love the files, probably because I'm more used to them. The SD card is indeed the main card and when shooting tethered with back-up "on", the back-up pictures go to that card. As I don't find LR too stable when shooting tethered, unfortunately, this back-up option is a very good thing. Hope this helps. Marc
