New Leica M in September 2016? The speculations.

Of course it will be.

I wonder why you suggested in another thread (or was it this one) that I was more interested in camera gear than taking pictures; or something to that effect. I always understood you were happy with your M(240).

I'm very happy with my M.

But I like cameras, and I sometimes let that get in the way of my photography. I suspect most of us do. I heartily admire those rare few who don't. Maybe you are one of them, but you didn't sound like it when you were describing your SL adventure, but I'm quite happy to be corrected.

The only things that get in the way of my photography are time, indifference and cameras which I can't get to work the way I want them to (most Sonys I've had).

I don't spend a lot of time fretting over my cameras - I just want to understand what they do, and how to make the most of them. It's a journey which takes time, as my failings are generally not the limits of my equipment. I was very vocal about wanting Leica to make an EVIL which would take my collection of M lenses, and the SL initially surprised me, then exceeded my hopes.

I'm not looking for the perfect camera - what I have is fabulous, and each is different. Every now and then I look at the PhaseOne XF and the H6D with admiration, but I know they don't fit the photography I like doing. I tried to use a 503cx for a few years, and the gain was minimal.

I must confess I was offended by your comment, which I saw as assuming things which were unjustified and dismissive. It was a disappointing conclusion to what had been an interesting exchange.

Excuse my duck comment, but a camera stripped down to only what you need is, by definition simpler.  I don't buy the idea that using such a camera makes photography more difficult or more hit and miss; nor do I buy the zen-like comments others have made. That raises too many value based issues. The value judgments in this discussion, spread over many threads, really add nothing to the discussion (for me).

If I decided to reduce my gear (it would be a sad day), I would probably be happy with the M60 - I'd mourn the loss of the others, and I'm sure I'd end up buying them all back again.

About 4 weeks into M240 after yrs of M9 & 100's of shots.  Most useful accessory is the 1.35x focus-able diopter (aging eyes) from Japan (I'm mostly 50mm lenses), which didn't work very well on the 9.

For now, I really can't imagine a better camera - its so invisible to use, I'm able to fully concentrate on the shot knowing I'll get what I want with accurate composition, exposure & focus.

Me happy

So, what do we know?

  • the M(240) was released in September 2012 (perhaps prematurely, in the sense that it wasn't really ready to ship until this time 2013)
  • since that time, we have an improved sensor (Q then SL)
  • we have better EVF
  • Jaap knows something, and wants everyone to know he knows something, but isn't telling
  • Jono knows a lot more, but won't let on that he knows anything

What can we expect?  Well, an optical rangefinder (I'm hoping), the same form factor and, if Jaap is right, a more than incremental improvement (read, hype and rather extravagant marketing claims).  Yay.

I won't be buying.

Cheers

John

John, you have said "I won't be buying" before.   I think you still owe me a cup of coffee on that.   I've said it too, about the SL.   I was wrong, and I am happy I was wrong.  And you will be happy with your new M by the end of the year, I suspect.  As will I, probably.  GAS is not curable.  You can have remissions, but it always comes back.

Yes, I do owe you a coffee, Alan.  I will be back in New York in early September, and will happily endure the brown water that passes for coffee to enjoy your company.  Maybe we can lure Stu to join us.

You may be right about the next M, but I'm not so sure.  When we took that original bet, my thoughts were on the M.  The SL filled a gap I was alway hankering for.  I had been given hints that it was coming, so the excitement for me was palpable.  My M system is pretty near perfect for me - 2 film Ms (the M3 a bit of an antique), and to digital Ms.  For the very reason that the SL works for me, the M(240) didn't.

Leica does have a habit of surprising, I have to say.  Whatever the M(240) replacement offers, it's unlikely to fuel my gas.  My problem will be the next SL lenses.  The 90-280, I'm resisting (I keep telling myself that it's simply too huge, too expensive and I'd never use it); not so sure I will resist the temptation of the 50 Summilux-SL or perhaps a 28 Summilux-SL.  I'm hoping theuy will be duds ...

Okay, not really.

Good try John.   Too bad you are coming to NY before Photokina or I think it would be two cups of coffee.  But do let me know when you are coming.  I live 25 mi from Manhattan and since I'm retired, I'm no longer there every day.

Indeed.

It's odd. The SL doesn't ring my bell, but the idea of an M with a EVF that works properly does. It doesn't have to be combined / integral to the camera - I can live with an add on, but it does need to work without the ridiculous lag and blackout of the current iteration, and have decent resolution. My accountant advises that this would be a good year to replace kit. So I do hope something good comes out in September

Hmmm... IS huh? Never would have expected image stabilization. Thanks for the leaking some details :)

Image stabilization (5 axis?)

or

custom (à la carte) leather coverage, now listen to the great news: from-the-beginning

?

Let's flip a coin!

Serious: isn't a minimum of the bayonet diameter in proportion to the chip size mandatory for IS? (And one of sony's alpha problems?)

So, a new bayonet? Well, with AF. To leave the second-hand market behind and get on with a hefty price rise.

Hello Chris:  M9 was my first M rangefinder, although in the past I shot extensively with 2, Mamiya 6 rangefinders (a great film camera!). Although I am good at rangefinder focusing, I'm not married to the rangefinder mystique. When the M240 was released, I sold my M9 & purchased the M240, which for my commercial work, is much more suitable in allowing me to shoot more of what I need to shoot (due to the live view, tethering & EVF add-on).  The SL didn't ring my bell until I started reading more about it, and especially the thought of being able to use all of my M (and one R) lenses accurately focusing wide open if need be, with the beautiful integrated EVF, the almost silent shutter and many more features that just about make it a Leica system camera that will replace my aging Canon system. So the rangefinder is gone for me, and I couldn't be more pleased with the SL. Maybe a new M would move me back to the rangefinder but for me at least, it would be a niche' purchase for specific (and less frequent) assignments. Exciting times!

Chris - interesting to hear your experience (and looking at your website it looks like the SL is helping you to make a living!).

A question - how do you find focusing in bright light / studio where you're more likely to be stopped down.  Do you need focus peaking, or do you depend on the appearance of the subject in the view finder?  Also, I do a lot of theatre / performance work, and for me the delight of the M's RF is it's capacity to focus accurately in low light (mainly with 28 + 50 lenses - I use a DSLR for telephoto focal lengths).  Grateful if you have any comments on this.  I'm still torn.  Wait for the next M iteration, or stick with my 2 M240s and use the upgrade fund to get an SL...

Do your own accounting do you :)

Actually no - perhaps if I did I'd advise myself to stick with the 2 M240s I have and write down the cost for another year or two... But when your gentleman of business advises to spend, what do you do?  ;)
