Q digital zoom vs cropping in lightroom?

This depends upon whether you are intending to process RAW files in Lightroom.  The RAW file will not be a cropped image so there is nothing to be gained using the digital zoom and you can crop in Lightroom very successfully.  In comparison, the JPEG will be cropped and will be a smaller image.

The RAW file will not reflect any of the contrast or sharpening effects either.   It really is the raw and unprocessed data file straight from the sensor.
