Continued from earlier post: corner crop - f0.95 vs f4. SL601+Noct0.95 in-camera jpg. No adjustment except white balance set to the white pillar of the foreground Raffles Hotel's colonial style building. Handheld. Focus set on the top of the building. Similar corner sharpness to M240 from my recollection.

i don't think the nocti is not a good lens to show sharpness but judging from your last crop, i hope you did some serious over sharpening or there is a serious compression issue....but the moire looks horrible!

I used in-camera jpg, no adjustment other then white balance. in the original crop, there is no moire, the crop is too big to upload so I down sample using bicubic sharpen Tri a smaller file size; if you go to the Instagram rshseow page, you see the original crop.

Took an SL for a test drive in Oslo today with my M-lenses today.  For long lenses it works very well. For the normal lens range, I think the M240 is a better choice.

Here is a sample, SL / 90 cron pre-asph, straight out of camera, no adjustments:

It can be seen here and it is my experience also that the skintones are not quite good yet, too reddish, and we have to wait for the first firmware update (as usual) for better whitebalance etc.

Here are some, in case you haven't seen them before. I can't guarantee a complete lack of cats however, so take care!

Jono,

Beautiful images (except the cat thing).  I had a chance to spend the afternoon today with the SL.  I began to understand that the SL is the way forward (for SLR type cameras).  The EVF is very much an OVF experience.  I had no idea that an EVF could be this pleasing and comparative to an OVF experience.  I can report that the Leica EVF could easily fool you into thinking that the SL is a dSLR.

This camera system is going to be fantastic once Leica brings out more Leica lenses.  I understand the 50mm Summilux is going to be better than the R 50mm/1.4 Summilux.

I felt the basic Leica simplistic DNA when using the SL today.

I'm just starting to look at the images I shot.  I wish LR had a profile for the SL.  So I won't comment on the images except to say that each irritation of Leica's new cameras are better and better as far as digital imagery goes.

The camera is smaller than my Canon 5DII and the "kit" Leica lens has a very dense feeling and is overall smaller than my Canon 5DII + 24-70/2.8 (which I love).  But, the SL has feel of the 5DII and 24-70 system.  I mean, this is not a Sony A7x type camera system as far as weight and size goes.  Which you can decide if it is for you.

The SL experience today is overall like the first time I had a chance to try the S several years ago.  This is a serious camera and system.

What can I say.  If you want a dSLR type system and you know Leica... this is it.

Jono, you do have dog pictures in your link.  I love dogs.  More than I like toast.   :)  So, I will forgive you for the cat picture.  And, your doggy picture is so nice.

Rick

I think it's probably more to do with the LR profile. generally speaking I think the colour is pretty good.

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't make any calls like in poker but I must say that I was very enthusiastic about the handling and ergonomics and the esthetics of the design of the SL, having it in my hands with M lenses and the really wonderfull smooth running adapter to M. I was disappointed however by the results in comparison to the results of my M9 with same subjects and lenses.

otto.f:

The delivered Leica SL cameras that went out for release on November 16 have updated firmware from what my testing with an up-to-date camera had a week before. The skin tones and color balance is dead-on accurate, overall, with the released cameras. Also, Adobe shipped Lightroom 6.3 (and the matching Camera Raw plugin) just after the SL release which has a camera calibration profile—that is again far more accurate and pleasing with respect to skin tones and overall color than the slightly cartoonish colors produced by Lightroom 6.1.1 with the same DNG image files.

Of course, the SL's color is going to be different from the M9's color, so if it's M9 color you want, you'll likely need to keep shooting with the M9. Its color palette and balance is different from almost any other camera I've ever used. (I found M9 color somewhat odd, frankly, and prefer the typ 240 color once the firmware is updated to current spec.)

We are definitely on a different track here. I never got used to the yellowish color cast of the M240 (from my own experience), so we might be able to not agree on the SL colors forever in the most ideal firmware, I don't know. But with a knife on my neck to choose between M240 or SL I wouldn't risk one scratch and choose for the SL........ not being pressed to let go of my M9 that is

Since this started out as an SL image thread, here is one:

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.  The SL is very SL2-like.

Hello,

I tried the Sl with 24-90 outside in poor weather. I wanted to know if the autofocus is really as fast as announced. it is. These pics I couldn’t have taken with my M.

Best regards
