Firmware Update....When? Guesses?

With presumably most of Leica's attention now diverted to getting the new SL out of the door has anyone any guesses as to when we might expect to see the first firmware update for our Q's?

A meaningful update is now well overdue in my not so humble opinion seeing all the feedback, some gripes and many really valuable suggestions this forum has provided Leica from it's Q users.

Hopefully the Q will not become an "orphaned" child, just a testbed and bait for the SL's development and launch........

I was hoping the SL day would bring also a firmware update for the Q. Waiting for the fix that the screen can be used independent from the viewfinder only for the settings. Might be one of the easiest things to fix with a firmware update.

Really hoping for 4K video..

As someone who has been in the film / video game for a long time it still mystifies me why anyone would even want such a camera to use as a serious video source, let alone asking for 4K. I've found most if not all still cameras that offer video capabilities to be very unsatisfactory to use in that capacity, they are neither fish or fowl, too much of a compromise.

For a start with the Q, ( and the FL for that matter ), you only have a fixed LCD and at best shooting video through a fixed rear facing LCD and/or EVF is very awkward so to operate properly you'll need to rig a separate monitor, maybe even a monitor recorder like the PIX 240i/E or the Atomos series if you want true 4K / 10 bit recording. Then you'd need a camera cage to support that, decent audio mic'ing capabilities and certainly with the Q an external power source for any kind of extended recording. With pretty decent 4K video cameras now costing less than the Q in some instances there's no reason in my opinion to try to adapt / rig a still camera to task video. By the time you've suited a camera like the Q, the SL or even a Nikon / Canon offering you may as well get a camera that's designed for video in the first place.

I do own a Lumix GH4 and have used that camera at times, ( rarely ), to capture some video. It's not awful, needs rigging of course but even that camera which is far better suited to the task than say the Q or SL, it needs a cage and other external additions to make it a viable tool. At least it does have a decent orientable LCD, that helps some, like the Q though the EVF is useless for video use.

The Q is just great doing what it's designed for, it's a terrific still camera, street camera or whatever camera tool. Why Leica puts video capabilities on these camera mystifies me and I do wish that in the now overdue firmware upgrade that they offer a way to have the option to cancel out the video altogether and allow that function button to do something else more useful. Perhaps it's the same with the FL. I don't know anyone in my side of this game who would consider using either camera for video acquisition, with or without 4K.

Ok, rant over, I'll go back in my box........sorry!

I am with you I never got it why people ask for video functions at all, on decent still cameras. I would love to see a later firmware version with the option to use the video button for something more essential. And these dammed holes in the camera for a absolutely useless internal microphone but I am sure some guys and girls, mostly in Asia, wan`t it that way.

Yes Lucky, I agree about the "absolutely useless" mic's too, they're in the perfect place to pick up any rain / moisture plus the breathing sounds of the camera operator if you are using the EVF for video recording. Dumb positioning. Hopefully Leica will add a firmware option to "park" the video and free up the video record button for other uses.......but I doubt it.

My Q is covered in black tape, over the mic holes, a piece to stop the diopter adjustment wandering off setting, and a Red dot disguise. Looks like something out of casualty, but works just fine.

I'd be fine with UHD to use it as a C cam. I have a C100 and NX1 which work fine for all of my video work, it would just be nice to have that option on the Leica.

I see no need for the Q to be have pro video features, but if it did not have any video options at all, I would've bought it. I need to be able to catch small videoclips every now and then. Smart move of Leica to include this, but 4K is not on my list.
