Advertisement Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Hi terrycym, Take a look here SL TTL system & flashes compatibility?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted November 3, 2015 Share #22 Posted November 3, 2015 According to the following vendor, the SF-40 will be available for £280 which sounds almost like a reasonable price https://www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/Leica-SF-40-Flash It's a rebadged £140 Nissin i40. That said, it's reasonably priced by Leica's standards and, if the TTL works with other Leica cameras, I might consider buying one at some point in the future. The manual output control (via a physical dial as opposed to the mind numbingly tedious soft button interface of the SF58) looks like a real plus, the smaller size a bonus. terrycym Posted November 3, 2015 Share #23 Posted November 3, 2015 It's made by Nissin but doesn't it have Leica specific firmware to make it work with Leica cameras. Without the Leica customisation, you won't get full flash TTL operation

What's not so clear is whether the TTL is backwards (and sideways) compatible to cameras like the M240, M9 and, dare I even ask, M7? My guess is it should be fine (at least as far as M9 and more recent goes).

FlashGordonPhotography Posted November 4, 2015 Share #26 Posted November 4, 2015 It has been said that it would work with the M240 I remember that too, although I don't have a source, so it could be the Whiskey talking. However, since the M, T, X and S systems all use the same TTL protocols, it would be a HUGE move for Leica to not retain that for the SL. It might be possible to add some features (off camera TTL would be nice). Removing backward compatibility would be silly. Especially when many M owners have been looking for a TTL solution exactly like the SF40 for their M cameras, for some time. I'm ordering two SF40's, for my M system. And if I can't use my SF58's on the SL I definitely won't be getting one of those. Gordon
