echorec Posted May 26, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, are there any old lenses that are incompatible with the MP? I know that some lenses won´t work with the M5 so I wonder if there are any similar issues with the MP. Thanks.

echorec Posted May 26, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 26, 2007 Hi, Well, I can´t use my SA 21/3.4 with my M5. Some collapsible lenses don´t work either. Best, Gunnar
philipotto Posted May 27, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 27, 2007 See what Stephen Gandy has to say about using lenses that project into the M5 body: http://www.cameraquest.com/m5.htm (under the heading: Lenses which project deeply into the body cavity Appearantly this is due to the unique metering cell of the M5. The only other M with this consideration should be the M8, whose metal shutter is closer to the mount and may be damaged by a lens projecting into it. Cheers, Philip
doubice Posted May 27, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 27, 2007 Hi, are there any old lenses that are incompatible with the MP? I know that some lenses won´t work with the M5 so I wonder if there are any similar issues with the MP. Thanks. Gunnar, All Leica lenses ever produced will work with the MP and all collapsible ones can be collapsed. There are only three lenses which will have issues when metering - the old Super Angulon 4/21mm, Super Angulon 3.4/21mm and the original version of the Elmarit 2.8/28mm. All these lenses have deep rear elements, which will prevent the meter cell from measuring the white spot on the shutter curtain. You will still get a reading, but it will not be accurate, as the rear element will block the light path of the meter. There are no other mechanical issues with any other Leica lenses. doubice Posted May 27, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 27, 2007 Hi, Well, I can´t use my SA 21/3.4 with my M5. Some collapsible lenses don´t work either. Best, Gunnar Your 3.4/21mm Super Angulon can be used on the M5, if a part of its bayonet mount is machined off. This part activates a lever in the M5 which allows the meter arm to be raised. This modification used to be offered by Leitz during the times of the M5 and the CL. None of the older collapsible lenses can be collapsed into the M5; doing so would damage the meter arm. lambroving Posted May 29, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 29, 2007 Hi, Well, I can´t use my SA 21/3.4 with my M5. Some collapsible lenses don´t work either. Best, Gunnar The 21/3.4 can be modified to work with the M5 without metering. Mine was from new and has never been used on any camera other than my M5.
