the version 4 pre asph is considered by many to be the very best 35 available. sold my asph when i got a chance to use one and have been offered embarassing amount of money for it but won't sell (at least no one has offered enoufh) same with my 75 summilux.

they are considered rare classics now.

hint the 35 cv ultron paints similarly to the 4th vesion cron, not quite the same but closer than the current asph

they aren't 'rare', and they aren't worth any more than any other half decent old leica lens

i picked mine up between 4 different example, just 4 weeks ago, thats 2 in the shop and 2 on ebay. Haven't looked since but no doubt more and have since come and gone on the market.

same with 75' lux's, i know of about 10 for sale currently from london to ebay to berlin.

Nikolaj,

A few weeks ago had one for sale on Rangefinderforum and it was sold within a few days. If you search it´s not very difficult to find some in black, but in chrome it´s more difficult because the chromes are produced in smaller numbers.

About buying on ebay, you have to be carefull but it´s not so difficult to protect yourself:

1. NEVER buy from someone who ask you to contact him or her through an email address in the ad but not through the ebay contact seller form;

2. before the auction is finished, send the seller an email with some questions about payment, shipping or local pickup; if you get no answer it´s suspicious if you get a positive answer it´s probably more secure;

3. NEVER pay by using a credit card or a cheque, I use only a banktransfer or PayPal;

4. last but not least NEVER buy from someone with a zero (0) feedback, a negativ feedback (-1) or little feedback (10) and look at the membership date, the longer ago the better.

With these precautions I had never problems with buying or selling on ebay, only with shipping to and from the USA, so I prefer to ship only within the EU but if you use a courier and full insured shipping it´s not necessary a problem.

i only buy from people with solid history and who are paypal verified

most people selling high quality lenses are just that

i tend to start a little commuincation with them as well and if i detect any hint of defensiveness or sneakiness then i walk away

jackal ..thanks for your abrupt and snotty answer, it certainly clears things up and adds a great deal of info, especially sources for these "common inexpensive lenses".

if readily and availble and cheap, buy them and post them here and RFF and you'll make a fortune. unless of course you're paying the current prices for them.

rare and expensive are relative and you obviously did not buy any of these lenses before the M8 M lens and accessory price rise when they could be had at a third of what they go for now, when LTM to bayonet adapter went for 15-25 instead of well over $100 and there now being a source for newly made adapter because there are none.

bill, just my experience

they aren't what i would term 'rare'

see my post, a 75 lux isnt rare either

you can buy 10 of them today, if you have the money, and thats just the 10 i know about casually

and again, the 35 isnt very expensive either compared to many many other leica lenses of the same age. I guess if you want to ague the finer points of that contention then we need to define what 'expensive' means to each of us, but certainly compared to the one other lens you mention, the 75 lux, a vs. 4 35 is less than HALF THE PRICE !

your story (how you were offered an embarrasing amount of money etc..) would lead one to believe that they are some sort of biblical artfact and i felt it necessary to correct that as it could mislead our original poster.

Why would anyone pay "a ridiculous" amount of money for a pre-asph 35 when you can get them readily from ebay and certainly camera shops in uk and london for 400-700 quid ?

sorry, but i've seen it all before. Poeple on single marque forums - whether it be cars, hifi equipment, camera equipment, racing suspension composnents, houses, computer equipment etc,,, - bigging up the value/exclusivity of what they own just to get a hit. I note that you didn't try and help palmskov find one of these lenses, you just bathed yourself in the lens's glory and supposed high value.

The chrome 35s are pretty hard to find. I'm the person that bought the one from Frank Reusen. Took quite a while for me to find the chrome version in such nice shape. Of course, I was only looking on ebay, RF forum, B&H, KEH, Adorama, Photo Village and a few other stores online. I'm sure there were probably others out there if you knew where to look.

I've been shopping lately for a 75 lux. They seem to be selling in the $2400 range - based on ebay, Leica Berlin and a few other places I've looked. Now just 6 months ago, you could have had the same lens for around $1,700. I was tracking them on ebay. I came close to pulling the trigger on a couple - but never did.

As for ebay, I've been involved in more than 100 transactions - mostly as a buyer. Outside of one or two moderately disappointing experiences, I've had great luck.

the 75 lux used to go for about 700

the pre asph 3-400

$2400 for a lens someone paid $700 less than 6 months earlier is an embarassing amount same with an offer of 1600 for a lens that cost 375.

so list the places that have them at the lower prices?

you're just late into the game and looking at current pricing.

nothing biblical about any lens, just horses for courses.

personally i think the CVs are wonderful and there are hordes of people with incredible equipment who can't take a decent photo.

fact is the vers 4 35mm and 75 lux are relatively hard to come by and command pretty high prrices as so many folks looking for them and listing as wtb will attest

Jackal, I think the posted item has about the right price for a lens that, maybe, has to be considered mainly as a collector's item (1st version 8 elements... is it Wetzlar or Canda ? In the pic can't read... if Wetzlar, the price is really good!) ; I think that the friend that started this thread maybe was searching for a more recent design, and seems to me that really is not so easy to find an almost new pre-asph in chrome...

I was looking for a 4th generation i chrome. Found it on Ebay and contacted the seller to let him know I would buy it. I was a 'buy now' auction and I had to contact him before I could buy since he only delivers to Germany. However in those 5 minutes somebody else bought it! Damn

This is the second time somebody buys a 35 chrom 4 generation right in front of me but other lenses will proberly come my way;)

So you you're the owner of such lense I'll buy it for approx. 900 euro.

Thanks for alle the comment by the way...
