atul Posted October 14, 2015 Share #1 Posted October 14, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey folks, I'm hoping somebody here might have some words of advice. I'm a 3-year user of Leica M240. Bought it brand new; now using with a Zeiss 35mm/f2 lens. Been working (mostly) well so far (while I was learning RF). Very recently, while on vacation traveling to UK, my M240 suddenly died. The shutter stuck while composing a frame, and didn't not fire. [i live in the US, and had taken 2 batteries + the US charger with me.] Now, with batteries fully charged, the camera's LCD screen does not turn on. I cannot play any pics already captured, can't see the Menu, Settings, etc. [Only the bottom right (RED) led turns on when I try to click on the shutter release button, but the shutter does not fully fire/release. :-(( ] I tried with a spare charged battery, but got the same result. :-(( 1. Anybody seen this problem? Is it a shutter problem or something else? 2. Short of sending it for repair (where?) is there anything I can do to diagnose the problem? Appreciate insights from people who may have seen this problem, or have related experience. Thanks!! -AA

Schrödinger's cat Posted October 14, 2015 Share #2 Posted October 14, 2015 Ok, this is an absolutely WAG, but it sounds like you are down to point of trying pretty much anything. Since you can't see the screen to do a complete reset, let's do it the hard way. Whenever I power on my M240 the menu always opens to the same place and with any luck yours does also, so let's try to step through it blind. turn camera off. insert FRESHLY charged battery turn camera on press and release Menu button once press the top edge of the round navigation control twice press the right edge of the round navigation control twice press the press and release Set button once (at this point the camera should reformat the memory card. I suggest using a known good memory card) after the camera has formatted the memory card, turn the camera off turn the camera back on press and release Menu button once press the top edge of the round navigation control three times press the right edge of the round navigation control twice press the press and release Set button once With any luck, this will perform a complete reset and just might fix something. All your saved menu settings will be reset to defaults. I suppose one could actually reload the firmware with this sort of blind procedure if desperate enough. Also, this assumes that your menu powers up to the same place as mine. Good luck.
atul Posted October 14, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted October 14, 2015 Thanks. Will give it a try when I get home. Is this some sort of undocumented feature? Schrödinger's cat Posted October 14, 2015 Share #4 Posted October 14, 2015 Thanks. Will give it a try when I get home. Is this some sort of undocumented feature? No, it's in the menu and in the instruction manual. I just wrote it down so you can step through it without the display.
Schrödinger's cat Posted October 15, 2015 Share #5 Posted October 15, 2015 Any Luck ??
atul Posted October 16, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted October 16, 2015 No luck :-(( I tried the Part A of your instructions (formatting the memory card) - but nothing happened. Specifically -- when I turn the camera ON, the small red LED (bottom right of the screen) flashes on a couple of times and stays on for a wee bit longer than usual (maybe a full second or two?). Then when I do your instructions (e.g. pressing the Menu button, etc etc) nothing happens; no activity at all on the LED. I tried it a couple of times. :-/ I'm going to check it again with another freshly charged battery to see what happens. Any Luck ??
thighslapper Posted October 16, 2015 Share #7 Posted October 16, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sounds fatal to me. Some sort of electrical failure. A trip to Leica Hospital is in order. If it is some unusual, non 'wear and tear' related issue they may be kind and fix it outside warranty for free ...... atul Posted October 16, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted October 16, 2015 I tried the procedure with another freshly charged battery - but got no response from the camera at all :-(( I'm sad but more annoyed. Not quite sure what to do here. Is there anyway to load firmware on this -- but how to do it if the camera does not turn on?? No luck :-(( I tried the Part A of your instructions (formatting the memory card) - but nothing happened. Well, if you didn't go all the way through both parts of the procedure you wouldn't expect to see anything on the LCD. Nothing could have been corrected by running only a part of the procedure, and you would have had to completely finish it to see any difference. If it worked at all. Exodies Posted October 17, 2015 Share #10 Posted October 17, 2015 It's not that he saw nothing on the LCD, there was no red LED during the formatting. I think it is correct to assume that the procedure isn't working. Time to send the camera for repair.
