lhotse Posted October 12, 2015 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I am thinking of picking up a small pelican case to put in my carry on backpack when I travel. I only need it to store an M9 and the Cron 35mm type IV + Hood. Does anyone know which is the smallest pellicase I can get away with? ideally I'm looking for the case with the least depth so that it doesn't bulk out my pack hugely. I've seen some folk use the 1150 to store a body and two lenses (1 mounted) + batteries etc. But I wonder if anyone has gone smaller? I'm not overly bothered if the lens is attached to the body while in the case as it is for transportation only and it'll be in my shoulder bag when I reach my destination. Any advice much appreciated
Advertisement Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Hi lhotse, Take a look here Smallest Pelican Case for M9 and Summicron 35/IV. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lhotse Posted October 12, 2015 Author Share #2 Posted October 12, 2015 As I apparently love the sound of my own voice (ask my wife) I'll reply to my own post with some updates. After constructing a number of rudimentary cardboard prototypes I'm starting to think I might *just* be able to squeeze the M9 with lens attached into an 1120 (internal dimensions: 18.4 x 12.7 x 7.8 cm, lid depth = 1.3 cm, bottom depth 6.5 cm) on its back and then place the hood to the side of the lens. I am however a little worried about the strap taking up precious room - but it is the bog standard leica one and does fold fairly well. Has anyone tried to do this? Am I crazy in thinking it might work? Cheers
Bill Livingston Posted October 12, 2015 Share #3 Posted October 12, 2015 Why not just use a neoprene case or wrap it in a towel for travelling in a backpack? the rest of the time it should be out and ready for use.

Normally I would agree with you - however, I've seen people ram their carry-on / come suitcases into the overhead lockers enough times to scare me into a hard case just for some peace of mind when I fly. Bill Livingston Posted October 12, 2015 Share #5 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) So have I... but an M camera isn't going to get damaged too much by this. I honestly wouldn't worry. Maybe that's why you haven't had too many replies on this. I think most M users just think you will use the case once or twice and then not bother again. i have mine in a Billingham Hadley Small when on a plane... But if I didn't have a couple of extra lenses and some accessories I probably wouldn't bother... I'd simply carry it. Thanks Bill - carrying it is certainly fine on short-haul but long-haul Australia <> UK (I'm a bonafide pom) it's not super practical. Bill Livingston Posted October 12, 2015 Share #7 Posted October 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm a bona ride Pom too... As you may have noticed. I hand carried my M-P back from Kuala Lumpur in January and from Brazil in April... I like stroking it when I'm bored on a long flight...!
sblutter Posted October 21, 2015 Share #8 Posted October 21, 2015 I kitted out a small backpack with neoprene - to fit inside my larger on board backpack The small one comes in handy when venturing out
