50mm Summilux Asph Review

I recently bought a 50mm Summilux Asph and I'm still wondering where this lens has been all my life!

It's beautiful - the focus and aperture rings are the best I've ever tried and the performance at all apertures is amazing

At f1.4 you look for scenes with isolated foreground features that exploit the dof and, as billed, these are wonderful

At smaller apertures the lens is more surprising - great contrast and resistance to flare

I'd read that the focus is a little stiff and it's just not - it's really smooth

The aperture ring is also very flickable with one finger

It's a biggish lens and the camera (M9) will tip forward when placed on a surface. It's also heavy

I had a number of older lenses, including a couple of 50mm Summicrons, that I've now sold - they just don't compare

I've kept a 28mm 2.8, 35mm 2.0 and 90 2.0 but I don't think they will get much use - the 50mm is a perfect one lens kit

Mine is stellar, mechanically and optically.

a relative did a side by side for bokeh  with current V4 Summicron.   The Lux was ahead by a mile.

Bokeh on the lux is definitely smooth, as is the entire rendering of the lens.  I wouldn't call one better than the other, just very, very different.  I don't (yet) own the Lux, but will buy on in January most likely, and have used the v5 Summicron as my main lens for the last three years.  The reason I don't yet own the Lux is because I am unwilling to sell my Cron to buy it.  The Cron is, imo, a better lens for edgier subjects, it adds a certain tension to images that I really like.  Bokeh is not so smooth, but is by no means horrible.  All-in-all, one of my very favorite lenses and one that I lusted after for decades before finally buying.

Presumably you have comparable photos to show just how the Summicron can't compare. I'd love to see the examples, just to see what I'm missing.
