Victor,

Thank you for your comments, and that it conveyed to you the atmosphere and feeling it did. We were to Israel last December and felt right at home in the local street markets.

I am working on a series from street markets, I enjoy it, when the vendors see me with a camera they gesture for me to take their picture, In most cases I don't even have to ask. It makes it difficult when I want to take candid shots there.

This was taken on the Island of Buyukada in the Sea of Marmara 3 Kilometers from Istanbul. This scene is one of many along a main street with fish shops, butcher shops, little grocrery stores, restaurants, coffee houses, flower shops, etc.

It is like stepping back in time, where bicycles and horse carriages are transportation (no private cars allowed) and as you walk along the shop owners know you and take time to wish you a good evening.

Regards,

Richard

ah ricard - im so much with in every word u say :-)))) about the atmospher and the feeling as if time stoped etc.

i also made a work of this kind in telaviv market called "schunat a tikva". i will upload later some images from there, and soon it will be on my new website too i suppose.

im very intrested to see your project - sounds great :-)))

u know - here in israel, people are not very welcoming u with the camera. vandors may think sometimes that u r from tax-offices checking them :-))) a bit paranoids we r in israel with the camera. i mean - in israel tv - there are many reality stuff with hidden cameras and people dont like it and became paranoids when they see camera :-))) so, unlike your problem in turkye that people smile to u , here, they hide from u sometimes :-)))

Victor,

I am also familiar with vendors not wanting to have their pictures taken because of the tax people. These are the people who set up their goods on blankets around the fringes of the street markets, they don't want their pictures taken. Once I saw the enforcment truck taking a vendors cart away, I didn't have my camera, but the image is still in my mind.

These people are another series I am working on. There is great disparity here between the super rich and the very poor. In my view, I see dignity in the people who will do any kind of business in order to earn a living, so I take candid photos of people engaged in all manner of enterprise.

On one hand I am very lucky as an American living here taking pictures, often I am seen as a tourist, and on the other hand I really stand out in non-tourist areas attempting candid photos.

Either way it is a enjoyable hobby.

Richard

true richard.. the point in those kind of photos is not only making good frames, but also to know how to behave in those places.

for example, when u say that u r a student, it works very well. the problem is that sometimes i "stop by", when i come back from some bussiness meeting, or what ever i was doing outdoors, and i dont really look like "typical" student (with small armani logos on cloths - but enough to see it :-)))

so me too, i dont look neither typical mediteranian, nor georgian (where i was born) but more like european. so i prefer to be turist if i see that people start getting nervous or hint of agressivenes on them.

as a technique, i will upload now some images and u can see what i mean... - i photograph ususally with wide lenses (fast 28mm). i have a very good sense of frame with the lenses i use mostly (28, 50), so i just make photos without even rising the camera to my eye. the focus is eassy too - u put the ring in the correct place - it is not that difficlut with 28mm and the finger tab, even in close distance. and the exposure - well u do it menually with sensitivity to light conditions. usually works without any problem if u r well concentrated and have good mood for photo.

so this way, i make candid photos where i can control in those split seconds the reaction in the candid photos.

i even invite people sometimes to look, and to create by that some interaction with me (and then with the viewer of the photos). it is different look than let them pose infront of camera :-))))

maybe u have similar approach in your candids, if not, hope this is helpful to u.

Victor,

Thanks for the suggestions. About five shots after this one of the produce I tried my first "hip shot" with the R-D1 and 35 mm lens while waiting outside a store while my wife shopped. My intention was to get the three guys sitting there smoking and drinking tea between the Pringles rack and the Doritos rack. I was really surprised to see that I got a real hip shot.

It was a new experience using the camera that way, I intend to do more of it. This was one of the reasons I bought a range finder in the first place, for the view finder and more manual functions.

ya richard - i like this shot too, though not sure about the tonalities etc.

this is exactly the point - to bring those little moments - u know - those things that seem to be rutine and meaningless, but actually - those are the moments that give a place its "character" and should i say - spirit (the daily).

by the way - rd1 is the epson range finder rite - the digi???

i would suggest u to try for those kind of things the tiny 25mm snapshot skopar. i used this lens once, and i can comfirm - its a really cool lens - and so tiny. no f2 here like on summicron but the f4 is fully usable with high quality, and again - the lens is much smaller. it also has click stops on 1m, 1.5 and 3m so u dont even have to look at the lens to focus.
