bradhusick Posted May 27, 2007 Share #21 Posted May 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Additional suggestion: there's no reason this has to have right angled edges around the part that your thumb rests upon. If that part were more "rounded", then when it rested against your body there would be less likelihood of an edge catching or gouging in. Think of more of a spoon-shaped thumb area. Also, some texture or ribbing on the part that contacts your thumb might help with the grip. -Bad
Advertisement Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 Hi bradhusick, Take a look here Have you seen this guy's grip yet?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
agro Posted May 28, 2007 Share #22 Posted May 28, 2007 Timothy, Another thing is perhaps shaping the grip to give us a hot shoe right above the hot shoe the grip is sliding in, so those who keep an extra viewfinder permanently on their M8's (like me) will be able to still have it attached. Cheers Agro
guidomo Posted May 28, 2007 Share #23 Posted May 28, 2007 Andrew, It would only be a "cold shoe" unless he also carries the contacts through. But I also would like to see an extra shoe for external viewfinder use. Otherwise this project is useless for me as I would want to keep the grip on all the time (assuming it is good). agro Posted May 28, 2007 Share #24 Posted May 28, 2007 "Cold" is fine for me, but "Hot" would be phenomenal
tomasis7 Posted May 30, 2007 Share #25 Posted May 30, 2007 I thought why not offer shorter version of the grip so thumb replacement could be at the same line as with film M bodies on the lever. Main reason for it that the shutter-finger could feel comfortable on the position than holding thumb too near shutter finger like a reptile . nice shape of the gripe! kodachrome64 Posted May 31, 2007 Share #26 Posted May 31, 2007 It is not as elegant a solution as what Tim has designed but I think this is the easiest fix. Though the SNOB is not pretty it seems to serve the purpose and does not interfere with the use of the hot shoe. http://www.leicagoodies.com/ Welcome, dear visitor! Fotogo Posted June 1, 2007 Share #27 Posted June 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The SNOB and SLING are fine designs using a variety of practical materials. My original design premise was to make a more solid feel to my grip, that felt like part of the camera. I was side tracked when trying to include a spot to hold my SD card while changing cards. Several comments have been made suggesting this is an unecessary feature. I agree. The develpoment of the model 2 is now stopped, and I regrouped my efforts to focus again on my original premise. The latest version, called the Thumbs Up model 3 is shown here for your comment. Positive and critical remarks are most welcomed. My flickr will display the entire histroy of this project. agro Posted June 1, 2007 Share #28 Posted June 1, 2007 Timothy, Looks phenomenal, but I still need a shoe for a viewfinder. Cheers Agro
thpeters Posted June 1, 2007 Share #29 Posted June 1, 2007 Timothy, Why not cut that piece of the flash shoe, and make it soft round at the end and glue it to the back? Like the halve round Snob, from leica goodies. That is for me the perfect solution, Theo
doubice Posted June 1, 2007 Share #30 Posted June 1, 2007 Timothy, Superb idea and execution but........., I could not live without a shoe for accessory finders. Best, Jan
carstenw Posted June 1, 2007 Share #31 Posted June 1, 2007 As an aside, where did you get the Leica M8 model?
guidomo Posted June 1, 2007 Share #32 Posted June 1, 2007 Shoe or boo! (Sorry if this sounds too harsh, it is a nice effort and looks very good but I could not do without the shoe. I don't often need an external viewfinder but I would not want to take the grip off when I do.)
Fotogo Posted June 2, 2007 Share #33 Posted June 2, 2007 As an aside, where did you get the Leica M8 model? Thanks for your message. I modeled my own M8 with CAD software. I needed a proper model in order to fit-up my virtual Thumbs Up with a high degree of accuracy. Cad models alow my design to be transferred to the robotic CNC machines that make my prototypes. Here are a few details I normally would not show here....but, they are fun to look at. Enjoy! You can be sure the pros at Leica have the real deal, when it comes to cad modeling....my models are not so precise, but suit my purpose perfectly. carstenw Posted June 2, 2007 Share #34 Posted June 2, 2007 Very nice! That must have taken a while. I have thought recently of modeling it myself, as a starting point for an M9 design, but didn't find the time yet.
Joe Mondello Posted June 2, 2007 Share #35 Posted June 2, 2007 Timothy, Superb idea and execution but........., I could not live without a shoe for accessory finders. Best, Jan I'm thinking that I would also like a cold shoe for a finder, but if the Thumbs Up is as easy to fit/dismount as a finder, then it may offer a practical advantage for steadying the camera with lenses in the 24-90 range and be as useful to those lenses (especially at the longer end) as a finder is for its lenses. But I am guessing of course!
gduveen Posted June 2, 2007 Share #36 Posted June 2, 2007 Like others, I think this is a fine design. My only comment is about the lower line of the plate along the back of the camera. I would prefer this to be a stright horizontal, rather than the rising and falling line in this image. The straight horizontal would, I think, be more in keeping with the general design and aesthetic of the M8. Gerard
