londonuk Posted September 6, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 6, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone, I'm really a voyeur here:) I have a couple of questions Q users might be able to help me with. I have been a film stills photographer for many years, although like many aspects of this industry, it's getting harder and harder to make any money, to the point where I now shoot as much video as stills. I digress. I have a kind of odd equipment set up. Canon 5D III with 24-70 and 70-200, plus a sony A7s with a few Nikon primes, this is mostly for my video work, but comes in useful for shooting on set (silent shutter). So, my questions: firstly, the pictures on this site using the Q are fabulous, with few exceptions. Not to dilute the quality of work but I'm referring to the quality of the images, the camera. They are some of the crispest pictures I've seen on the internet. So, is it the site here that enables the pictures to shine, or is it really this camera? I'm interested to possibly buy this camera for my work and I'm curious to know if the files really are this good? Is it the lens? the chip? the processing? I'm thinking this could do as my wide lens and also my 35mm lens, particularly as i already shoot with the A7s at 12mg pixels. Second question is: how quiet is the Q shutter? I'd really appreciate anyones comments and amy comments on this camera as a working tool. Thanks in advance

spylaw4 Posted September 6, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 6, 2015 To answer the second question first: Very very quiet. I suppose, like the Digilux 2, there's a certain amount of synergy at work between lens & sensor & processing to produce the images, but the resulting prints are really brilliant. Any site on the internet doesn't IMO do full justice to images, so if they're good on the web.....!
viramati Posted September 6, 2015 Share #3 Posted September 6, 2015 I have to say that the files are a real eye-opener and you should try to find some DNG's that you can download and see for yourself. The shutter is a leaf-type and consequently extremely quiet and is only really audible to any degree in a silent room
Guest jvansmit Posted September 6, 2015 Share #4 Posted September 6, 2015 I've only ever shot stills on one movie so am far from experienced but I think the Q's shutter might just be audible if there's minimal ambient noise. I also noticed this week that subjects could clearly hear the shutter sound when I was shooting in a room with bare concrete walls & no soft furnishings. Based on some very rough and ready 'testing' at 3 metres, the FOV is almost the same as my 24mm Lux (which I really appreciate!). good luck !
prk60091 Posted September 6, 2015 Share #5 Posted September 6, 2015 I was out at sunrise on Saturday. With very little ambient noise the shutter is noticeable. I think the quality you see is the result of the lens and sensor combo (the lens being designed for the sensor).
digitalfx Posted September 6, 2015 Share #6 Posted September 6, 2015 If you like any of the photos here, you will like them even more on your computer where they are full resolution. No site will make a cameras images look better.
CharlesL Posted September 7, 2015 Share #7 Posted September 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) is it the site here that enables the pictures to shine, or is it really this camera? You can find sample DNG files on the Web. Download a couple of them and see what you can do with them. Compare with the thumbnail JPGs embedded in the DNGs.
