Sometimes people are begging for troubles!

You spend US$4500+ on a camera and you want to save US$50 on a battery....

Let's see it this way:

1- cheap battery made my unknown maker. It works perfectly and you have saved US$50 :-)

2- cheap battery made my unknown maker. It fails, leaks acid and ruins your camera... Leica finds out and cancel the garanty and bye bye battery and camera you have lost US$ 4500.

3- very good battery that comes from the same plant as the geniune one... but for what ever reason has not Leica logo. Likely reason is that it did not meet the Leica standard. The battery does not fail ever... you have saved US$50

4- very good battery that comes from the same plant as the geniune one... but for what ever reason has not Leica logo. Likely reason is that it did not meet the Leica standard. The battery FAILS and ruins the camera... Leica says.. hey, this battery is similar to ours, but, Where is our logo? and bye bye battery and camera you have lost US$ 4500.

Do you really want to play with your garanty for US$50??? knowing that if you go wrong you lose US$4500+ ???

On a US$200 camera I would surely go for the cheap version but on a US$4500+ NO WAY !!!!!

Personally I only have the Leica branded ones but I wouldn't hesitate to use a generic one that was correctly specified. Sorry Eric, but I hardly think that using a generic battery is likely to result in any of the scenarios you describe. Let's not forget that the Leica battery is just one of these cheap 'other' batteries that happens to have Leica written on it. This idea of Leica only selling batteries of a higher standard is total nonsense.

Hi,

I do not say Leica are of higher standard I just say that in the event a battery would fail I would rather have a Leica logo on it.

Cheap batteries are likely to come from the same manufacturer as the Leica ones and have the same standard (although some may be rejected for not meeting the specs).

The question is simply, do you want to waive a garanty for saving 50 bucks?

Well I succombed to buying a aftermarket battery. I was taking one of my Leica batteries out of the charger and dropped it on my hard kitchen floor. It got a crack in the casing on one corner. I snapped it back together but figured it wouldn't be good to use in the camera.

So I bought one from B&H, a Impact brand, for $79.00. It seems to be working fine.

Near tried the ones from eBay.

so you think leica manufactures the battery themselves?

no, as I said, Leica obviously uses third party. But the Leica logo is what makes the garanty cover if anything goes wrong.

Anyway, one of the above post says, his "cheap" battery charges faster but last shorter, this is a clear proof that the batteries are not identical.

I understand saving money on third party accessories that do not affect the electronic but saving US$50 sound non sense to me. Although I respect others decision. We are ask for opinion, so I gave mine. Everyone can tell his or her experience and opinion.

There are a lot of third-party batteries horror stories that prevent me from using one. Even the ones that are supposed to be Leica, I would have to make sure that they really are certified by Leica.

Cell phone battery explosions are probably one of the most common ones. I'd hate to have a bettery exploding in my M8.

Last week I lost my spare Leica battery on the local headland. I am strapped for cash at the moment so secumbed to an ebay clone battery.

So far it has charged registered full, and seemed to work on an afternnoon shooting., However after a further recharg it now it registers on the last third but still seems to work. It looks the same, probably from the same manufacturer but I am yet to be convinced that it performs the same as a Leica branded battery.

Still beggers can't be choosers.

Has it happened? Yes. Is it "common". No! It's extremely rare actually. And many times, it can be traced to using an incompatible battery, or an incompatible charger. Don't forget to mention that there are many FIRST-party battery horror stories as well - Sony's laptop battery recall comes to mind.

Just after I bought my Canon 1DMKII I got 3 aftermarket batteries for it. Same reason the Canon ones were quite expensive. One never worked, another I have problems charging and the third I just tossed as after giving it a full charge it lasted exactly 15 shots. These along with the original Canon battery were all cycled properly. The canon battery I still get well over 1000 shots per charge.

Progress report on my ebay clone battery.

I have recharged it for the third time and now it shows a full charge so perhaps that was a glitch.

I know I am walking a little on the wild side but I am prepared to give these batteries a chance, I think at the moment it is a risk worth taking. Of course, others would profoundly disagree.
