ho_co Posted May 24, 2007 Share #22 Posted May 24, 2007 Has anyone tested it against the new Zeiss ZM 25 mm Biogon? Besides the Reid Reviews citation, see articles by Erwin Puts, comparing many of the current ZM's with their Leica equivalents. It's not that I don't like the lens or that the focal length isn't useful, I just don't carry it around as I have the CV15 and the 35 lux. If I'm carrying 2 lenses, 24 or 35 and 50. 3 lenses it'll be 15, 35, and 50 cron. 4 lenses: 15, 35, 50, and 90MEM. I rarely only carry 2 lenses. I'm debating using the 30% offer on the WATE or the 75 cron. If I go with the former, the 24 might see even less action, and I'll probably sell it. As great as any lens is, every photographer has different needs (and resources).
fotografr Posted May 24, 2007 Share #24 Posted May 24, 2007 As great as any lens is, every photographer has different needs (and resources). Very true. The reason for my statement was simply that anyone who uses the 24mm ASPH will quickly discover that it is one of the best lenses Leica produce. Since it effectively becomes a 32mm on the M8, it makes a very nice pairing with something like the 50mm f/1.4 ASPH for a great two lens kit. Since I place a high value on a light, compact bag I rarely pack more than that.
Fin Posted May 24, 2007 Share #25 Posted May 24, 2007 I agree with fotografr - this lens pairs up brilliantly with a 50 (Noctilux in my case). I have a theory that your first lens can determine your subsequent lens selection when it comes to Leica M lenses (unless money is no object!). I can quite understand 35, 28 or 21 owners not wanting to rush out and buy this lens (with a 24 and 50, I'm leaning now towards a CV15...or maybe a 75lux...or perhaps a 90 f4 macro...aaargh!! the agony of choice!) Back to the 24: After lugging around the Nocti for a couple of months I have found the 24 delightfully tiny, 32mm is a very versatile focal length and the drawing is wonderful. It stays on my M8 most of the time now and I only bring the Nocti out for low light and the Nocti "look". Hmm - 35 lux images look very good too...aaargh! Shootist Posted May 24, 2007 Share #26 Posted May 24, 2007 With the purchase of the M8 I knew I'd want some more lenses. I normally used a 50 cron and 90 Tele-Elmarit with my M3's, and some times the 135 f/2.8 and I threw in a Summicron-C 40mm f/2 for just that little extra width. I was going to get a 35 Cron and the 24 Elmarit to go with my 50 Cron to round out the M8 lens kit. I figured that would make a real nice kit and I'd be done But then because of all you people on this forum I decided to get the 75 Cron ASPH also. Little did I know that one day when I was at B&H they had the 28/2.8 Elmarit ASPH with the Add to Cart button bigger then life and before I knew it I had pushed that button. So now my M3/M8 lens kit is the 24, 28 Elmarit, 35 Cron, 40 Cron-C, 50 Cron, 75 Cron, 90 TE and the 135 Elmarit. Soon I will add either a WATE or just the CV 15. But more then likely it will be the WATE.

Keep reading this thread and someone will have to cut my fingers off so I can't hit anymore of those tempting messages. LOL
Rolo Posted May 24, 2007 Share #28 Posted May 24, 2007 Pleased to see a discussion on the 24mm for a change. Most debates have been on the 28mm. Bought mine a couple of months ago in anticipation of my purchase of an M8, which still hasn't happened yet. The two frames below are from my first film ( MP, 160 ISO, no filter) and I was very impressed with this lens' drawing ability and its colouration. Seems very sharp and gives great confidence. wparsonsgisnet Posted May 24, 2007 Share #29 Posted May 24, 2007 No one would complain about those images. Film? Aperture? Great lens, isn't it.
Rolo Posted May 24, 2007 Share #30 Posted May 24, 2007 Film was Portra 160 NC. Can't remember the aperture, but likely to be f5.6, maybe f4 as I tend to shoot wide open if I can to get the advantage on the DSLR's. However, in these examples I was aware of the need for a little depth of field. I also shoot a Canon 1D MkII N and am disgusted with the performance of the 16-35mm zoom at around the same field of view. There is absolutely no comparison with the Elmarit. This Leica 24mm is a beaut and the quality of the image gives head room for cropping. Went for the 24mm in a 24/35/50/90 kit so that I can get a substantial change of view if I need it. With film, I use the 35 & 50 Summilux' mostly and very rarely the 90, but the 24mm encourages a walk around/close-up approach. On the M8 it'll be a toss up between the 24 & the 35 for the most used. wparsonsgisnet Posted May 24, 2007 Share #31 Posted May 24, 2007 The 24 and 35 are my most used lenses, as well. Lineup is 24, 35, 50, 75, 90. Looking for a wide -- your images are typical of M8 capture that makes me want to get wide.
huwge Posted May 25, 2007 Share #32 Posted May 25, 2007 I think some people forget that you can also get nice OOF blur with the 24 - this is the only one I have to hand, but I think it conveys the sense of what I mean.
