fastcar888 Posted August 17, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) It look as though I am going to be migrating from couple of other software providers (Perfect Photo, Aperture, Color Efex Pro, Photomatrix Pro) to Lightroom CC (6.1). I probably should have started with Adobe software from the beginning, but I did not. Do you use Lightroom 6.1 or CC for your post processing? What are your thoughts and opinions on Lightroom 6.1, or CC for the Q? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Hi fastcar888, Take a look here Lightroom 6.1 or CC post photo with Q. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Overgaard Posted August 17, 2015 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2015 The Lightroom 6.1 comes with the Leica Q so you can use Lightroom without being a subscriber to the CC (Creative Cloud). The photos you import from the Leica Q will be the same in Lightroom 4, Lightroom 5 and Lightroom 6. There is very little upgrades between the versions. Lightroom is the software to use in my opinion. There isn't that many other options anyways. What you may "loose" when importing the photos into Lightroom you previously imported into other applications, is the adjustments. At least the DNG files that you adjusted in Aperture will not keep their adjustments in Lightroom but will look in Lightroom as when you imported them from the camera back to Aperture the first time. You may try to export your DNG (or raw) files from Aperture with changes written into the XML file but I am doubtful Lightroom can handle them or even show them. You may want to export high resolution JPG (or TIFF) files of your adjusted images from Aperture and other applications so as to have final images with the look you edited them towards then. Thank you. I plan to wipe the slate clean, and leave what I have in Aperture. With the new DNG (raw files) they will go into Lightroom. Youtube has some fairly comprehensive tutorials on Lightroom 6.1. It does not seem overly complicated, but I wonder if there is something I am missing. Meanwhile, with Leica Q's Chinese water torture distribution system, I will be blessed with good luck to receive the camera by December from my local Leica store. Appreciate your response. Overgaard Posted August 18, 2015 Share #4 Posted August 18, 2015 "Leica Q Chinese water torture distribution system" ha ha, that is a good expression. I believe one can always find what one needs. If you go look at different locations you will likely find one in stock or close to being in stock. Especially if you travel it is fairly easy. I had one who got one in Meister Hamburg and Leica Salzburg arriving the same days (so he had to let one of them go).

If there is one thing to understand fully before using LR is the use of catalogs, which is effectively your metadata index. You can keep your image files anywhere, but your catalogue file should be on the hard drive of your main machine (my iMac) and backed up. Any other users should have their own catalog files. If Jim's catalog is open and Fred choses to open his catalog, LR6 will close and re-open, so there is no risk of collections getting mixed up. When you import, you will probably "Add" images, which is like referencing in Aperture. You just index the files and add them in your catalog, without copying the files. Catalog export and import are also vital. I travel with a Mac Pro and Passport drive and edit as I go along. This results in a separate catalog on the Mac Pro. It is then easy to transfer the images and adjustments to your home/office/desktop computer: 1. Connect your laptop to the storage drive in your office (preferably by USB) 2. Highlight the images you want to transfer 3. Use the "Export with Catalog" function. This will copy the original images and create a new catalog for those images, including your edits. 4. Re-connect your storage drive to your main computer (if disconnected in the first place) 5. Use the "Import from another Catalog" function and, when asked, click on the catalog created in the export. You will then find the images in your main catalog with the edits. Hope that makes sense.
sls Posted September 3, 2015 Share #6 Posted September 3, 2015 p.s. Am I the last person to notice that LR6 update 6.1.1 includes automatic Leica Q lens profiling? Very neat.
CharlesL Posted September 5, 2015 Share #7 Posted September 5, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I opened a couple of sample Leica Q DNG files in Raw Therapee. As mentioned in a review I saw, the color temperature was around 40000K, plus or minus several thousand degrees, not the typical range of 2000K to 9000K. I hope it is only a quirk. At the least, you must get a different feel for the numbers when you want to adjust by eye, making a photo warmer or cooler.
